Close Grip Bench Press vs Barbell JM Press Strength Standards
Compare your barbell close-grip bench press and barbell JM press against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Use one clean 1–12-rep set per lift to review estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.
First lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, barbell is lowered under control to the lower chest or sternum on every repetition. For the second exercise, lower under control toward a consistent high-torso target, preserve the triceps-dominant press-extension path, and finish at full elbow extension. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

How Your Close Grip Bench Press vs Barbell JM Press Result Is Calculated
The comparison starts by estimating each max separately. It then rates both lifts against their own standards before identifying the lower result.
1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set
When the set contains one rep, the entered load is the estimate. For 2–12 reps, the calculator keeps the less aggressive of the two formula results.
- Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
- Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)
For the most useful Close Grip Bench Press vs Barbell JM Press comparison, enter clean, difficult sets performed with the same technique and range of motion you use in training. Lower-rep sets usually require less extrapolation.
2. Find the close-grip bench press strength level
For close-grip bench press, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so heavier lifters are expected to press more total barbell weight without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.
3. Find the barbell JM press strength level
The barbell JM press rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so heavier lifters are expected to press more total barbell weight without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.
4. Compare the two results
Strength level decides the comparison first. Matching levels remain Balanced unless progress toward the next target differs by at least 10 points.
A priority result is a standards comparison, not a diagnosis. Differences in technique, fatigue, practice, or set effort may influence it. Age range is recorded anonymously and does not alter these standards.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Estimate each max | Use the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result. |
| Rate the close-grip bench press | Adjust close-grip bench press targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule. |
| Rate the barbell JM press | Adjust barbell JM press targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule. |
| Compare different levels | Name the lower-level lift as the priority. |
| Compare matching levels | Use Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points. |

For a useful comparison, perform a strict close-grip bench press and a strict barbell JM press using the setup and load rules below. Use strict, repeatable Close Grip Bench Press and Barbell JM Press tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and weight-entry rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different weight conventions.
Enter total barbell weight for a strict close-grip bench press
Use a straight free-weight barbell with the hands inside shoulder width. Touch the lower chest or sternum under control and press to full elbow lockout. Do not count wide-grip, partial, assisted, Smith-machine, incline, floor, board, or machine press reps.
Enter total barbell weight for a strict JM press
Use a flat bench and straight free-weight barbell. Lower under control toward a consistent high-torso target, preserve the triceps-dominant press-extension path, and finish at full elbow extension. Do not substitute a bench press, skull crusher, rolling extension, partial, bounced, assisted, Smith-machine, or overload-device rep.
