Barbell Plate Calculator
Use this Barbell Plate Calculator to turn a target weight into the plates needed on each side. Enter the bar, collars and matching plate pairs you actually have.
The calculator keeps both sides balanced and includes every part of the setup. If your plates cannot make the exact target, it shows the closest lower and higher totals instead of pretending the target is available.
You’ll get the achievable total, a plate-by-plate setup for each side and a full weight breakdown you can save, copy, share or print.
Your Plates and Total
Your result tells you the total you can put on the bar and the exact plate combination for each side. Check the requested total against the achievable total before you start loading plates.
If an exact setup is unavailable, use the lower and higher alternatives to choose the better fit for today’s workout. Save the setup when you want to use the same bar, collars and plate inventory again.

Enter the Equipment You Actually Have
Enter the full target, the empty bar weight, one collar’s weight and every matching pair of plates you can use. One pair means one plate for the left side and one for the right.
Keep every value in the same unit. If your gym has several bars or plate sets, use the equipment in front of you rather than a standard value from memory.
- Weight unit
- Choose the unit shown on your weights.
- Target total weight
- Enter the total you want on the bar, including the bar and collars.
- Bar weight
- Enter the weight of the empty bar. Check its label if you are unsure.
- One collar's weight
- Enter the marked or measured weight of one collar. Use 0 if you do not count collars. Competition collars are commonly 2.5 kg (about 5.5 lb) each; lightweight collars vary.
- Plates available
- Enter the number printed on each plate and how many matching pairs you have. One pair is one plate on each side. Use the selected unit; do not convert the plate marking.
- Which available weight do you want?
- Use the exact target, or choose the closest available weight below or above it.
Check Every Part of the Barbell Total
The breakdown shows how the bar, both collars and every plate pair combine to make the final total. Use it as a quick check that nothing was counted once when it belongs on both sides.
The chart updates from your calculation, and its table gives the same values in text for copying, printing and screen readers.

How the Calculator Chooses Your Plates
The calculator first subtracts the bar and both collars from your target, then divides the remaining weight equally between the two sides. It searches only the matching plate pairs you entered.
When more than one setup reaches the same total, it uses a consistent tie-break so the result does not change between visits. Open the calculation details for the exact arithmetic.

Equipment Limits and Source Notes
The answer is only as accurate as the bar, collar and plate weights entered. Keep kg and lb inventories separate, and confirm specialty-bar or nonstandard plate markings before using the result.
