Bench vs Smith Machine Wide Grip Bench Press Strength Standards
Compare your bench press and smith machine wide-grip bench press against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Add a recent 1–12-rep result for each lift to compare estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.
First lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, lower the bar under control to the chest, pause without bouncing, and press to full elbow lockout with no spotter assistance. For the second exercise, lower to light mid-sternum contact; press to elbows within 5 degrees of full extension without bounce, rehooking, support loss, or asymmetry. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

How Your Barbell Bench Press vs Smith Machine Wide-Grip Bench Press Result Is Calculated
Each set is converted to an estimated max before the calculator assigns exercise-specific strength levels and compares them.
1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set
A one-rep set uses the entered weight. For 2–12 reps, both formulas are calculated and the lower estimate is retained.
- Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
- Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)
Use recent Bench Press and Smith Machine Wide-Grip Bench Press sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.
2. Find the bench press strength level
The bench press rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so heavier lifters are expected to press more total barbell weight without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.
3. Find the smith machine wide-grip bench press strength level
The standards use the sex-specific thresholds from the individual Smith Machine Wide-Grip Bench Press tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
Two-thirds scaling raises the target as bodyweight rises while limiting the size advantage that a direct one-to-one adjustment would create.
4. Compare the two results
Each max receives a level from Beginner through Elite. The lower-level lift becomes the priority. At matching levels, a priority appears only when one lift is at least 10 points farther from its next level; otherwise the result is Balanced.
A priority result is a standards comparison, not a diagnosis. Differences in technique, fatigue, practice, or set effort may influence it. Age range is recorded anonymously and does not alter these standards.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Estimate each max | Use the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result. |
| Rate the bench press | Adjust bench press targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule. |
| Rate the smith machine wide-grip bench press | Use the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule. |
| Compare different levels | Name the lower-level lift as the priority. |
| Compare matching levels | Use Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points. |
The calculator above applies these steps to your exact entries and reports both lift ratings, both next targets, and the final comparison.
How Men’s Barbell Bench Press and Smith Machine Wide-Grip Bench Press Standards Differ
What the men’s data shows:
The standards come closest at 120 lb.

Barbell Bench Press and Smith Machine Wide-Grip Bench Press Exercises Used by This Calculator
The calculator expects repeatable bench press and smith machine wide-grip bench press results. Follow each exercise definition below so the two ratings are based on valid tests. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Bench Press and Smith Machine Wide-Grip Bench Press tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.
Use a paused competition-style barbell bench press
Lower the bar under control to the chest, pause without bouncing, and press to full elbow lockout with no spotter assistance. Enter the total barbell weight. Do not enter a touch-and-go, assisted, partial, Smith-machine, dumbbell, incline, decline, equipped, or bench-shirt result.
Use the Smith Machine Wide-Grip Bench Press setup and load convention
Use Smith rails vertical within 1 degree and a non-counterbalanced bar. Measure actual unloaded resistance and enter it plus every plate on both sleeves. Center a rigid 0-degree bench. Maintain head, shoulders, back, and glutes in contact and feet planted. Set safety stops 2 cm plus or minus 0.5 cm below chest-touch height. Use a closed pronated grip whose hand centers equal 2.0 times measured biacromial width plus or minus 2 cm, capped at 81 cm. If the calculated target exceeds 81 cm, use exactly 81 cm. Lower to light mid-sternum contact; press to elbows within 5 degrees of full extension without bounce, rehooking, support loss, or asymmetry. Count 1–12 controlled reps. Chalk/wrist wraps allowed; straps/hooks and assistance prohibited.
