Weighted Push-Ups (standard) vs Weighted Chin-Up

Compare your weighted push-up and weighted chin-up against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Add a recent 1–12-rep result for each lift to compare estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.

First lift: added weight and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: added external weight only and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, keep a straight line from shoulders to heels, lower the sternum to roughly two to three inches from the floor. For the second exercise, supinated (underhand) grip on a straight bar or fixed pull-up bar. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

Weighted Push-Ups vs Weighted Chin-Up Strength Standards

The paired standards below show what the weighted push-up and weighted chin-up each require at the same strength level. They are separate exercise targets rather than a prescribed difference between your lifts.

Select the appropriate sex table and nearest bodyweight, then choose a strength-level column. Values are ordered Weighted Push-Ups / Weighted Chin-Up in pounds with kilograms underneath. The calculator above handles exact bodyweight and set inputs.

How Your Weighted Push-Ups vs Weighted Chin-Up Result Is Calculated

Each set is converted to an estimated max before the calculator assigns exercise-specific strength levels and compares them.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

When the set contains one rep, the entered load is the estimate. For 2–12 reps, the calculator keeps the less aggressive of the two formula results.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

Set quality matters for this Weighted Push-Ups vs Weighted Chin-Up comparison. Enter technically consistent, challenging sets, and prefer lower-rep results when practical because the estimate extends less far beyond the performed set.

2. Find the weighted push-up strength level

The individual weighted push-up tool supplies sex-specific standards for estimated added weight divided by bodyweight. Novice through Elite use the exercise-specific added-weight-to-bodyweight thresholds. No unsupported Stretch target is added above Elite.

3. Find the weighted chin-up strength level

The individual Weighted Chin-Up calculator supplies sex-specific standards for estimated added external load divided by bodyweight. Novice through Elite and the stretch benchmark use the exact exercise-specific threshold export; bodyweight is not added to the entered load.

4. Compare the two results

Each max receives a level from Beginner through Elite. The lower-level lift becomes the priority. At matching levels, a priority appears only when one lift is at least 10 points farther from its next level; otherwise the result is Balanced.

The result identifies the lower standards rating, not its cause. Technique, fatigue, training history, and set quality can all affect the comparison. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.

StageWhat happens
Estimate each maxUse the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result.
Rate the weighted push-upUse the weighted push-up added-weight standards directly without changing their specialized bodyweight method.
Rate the weighted chin-upUse the exercise-specific added-load-to-bodyweight thresholds directly without allometric rescaling.
Compare different levelsName the lower-level lift as the priority.
Compare matching levelsUse Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points.

Weighted Push-Ups and Weighted Chin-Up Exercises Used by This Calculator

For a useful comparison, perform a strict weighted push-up and a strict weighted chin-up using the setup and load rules below. Use strict, repeatable Weighted Push-Ups and Weighted Chin-Up tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.

Use strict weighted push-ups and enter added weight only

Keep a straight line from shoulders to heels, lower the sternum to roughly two to three inches from the floor, and finish every rep at full elbow lockout while the added weight stays fixed. Enter only the external load, not bodyweight plus load. Do not enter knee, incline, decline, bench, box, partial, kipping, rest-pause, sagging, or pike push-ups.

Use the Weighted Chin-Up setup and load convention

Bodyweight chin-up with external load attached via dip belt, vest, or equivalent. Supinated (underhand) grip on a straight bar or fixed pull-up bar. Start from a dead hang or controlled full extension at the bottom. Chin must clearly pass above the bar at the top of each rep. Full elbow extension at bottom and controlled lockout at top required. No kipping, swinging, or lower-body assistance. Consistent range of motion and technique assumed across tests. Total system load = bodyweight + external load. Raw execution only. No band-assisted or machine-assisted chin-ups. No partial range of motion reps. No kipping or momentum-based reps.
