Reverse Lunge Strength Standards Calculator
Under strict Reverse Lunge strength standards, Novice starts around 8 reps for men age 20-29 and 6 reps for women age 20-29, while Elite starts around 60 reps for men and 48 reps for women.
Enter your sex, bodyweight, age, and strict reps to see whether your Reverse Lunge is Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, or Elite for your bodyweight and age.
The calculator compares your valid strict reps with the Reverse Lunge standards for your sex, bodyweight, and age. This keeps the result focused on bodyweight performance instead of load, estimated 1RM, or a different exercise.
Understanding Your Reverse Lunge Strength Score
Your Reverse Lunge score is the total number of strict alternating reps. Count both sides together: 12 left-side reps plus 12 right-side reps is a score of 24 total reps, not 12 per side. The calculator compares that result with the standards for the sex, age range, and bodyweight you select.
The score is useful only when every attempt follows the same movement standard. Begin the attempt from this position: stand tall with both feet on the floor, no hand support, and enough space to step backward safely. Each rep steps backward into a lunge deep enough that the front knee bends clearly and the back knee lowers close to the floor without bouncing off it; then the athlete returns to full standing control.
Count the result this way: count one rep each time a backward lunge reaches approved depth and returns to standing; do not count partial reps, failed returns, balance resets, or reps from a different variation. Every counted rep finishes standing tall before the next rep begins. Keep retests comparable by using the same stance, floor surface, footwear or barefoot convention, depth rule, and alternating pattern.
Reverse Lunge Strength Standards
These are Endura’s standards for comparing consistent Reverse Lunge attempts. They are exercise-specific practical benchmarks, not population averages.
How Endura set these standards: The approved Reverse Lunge model defines Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Elite strict-repetition benchmarks for men and women in five age groups. Each exact threshold and tier boundary is checked against the calculator before publication.
The tables organize Reverse Lunge standards by sex and age. Compare your total strict alternating reps with the Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Elite columns. A result below the Novice threshold is classified as Beginner.
Men — Reverse Lunge Standards
| Age | Novice | Intermediate | Advanced | Elite |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20-29 | 8 | 20 | 36 | 60 |
| 30-39 | 7 | 18 | 32 | 54 |
| 40-49 | 6 | 16 | 29 | 48 |
| 50-59 | 5 | 13 | 23 | 39 |
| 60+ | 4 | 10 | 18 | 30 |
Women — Reverse Lunge Standards
| Age | Novice | Intermediate | Advanced | Elite |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20-29 | 6 | 16 | 29 | 48 |
| 30-39 | 5 | 14 | 26 | 43 |
| 40-49 | 5 | 13 | 23 | 38 |
| 50-59 | 4 | 10 | 19 | 31 |
| 60+ | 3 | 8 | 15 | 24 |
For example, men age 20-29 reach Intermediate at 20 reps, Advanced at 36 reps, and Elite at 60 reps. Women age 40-49 reach those same levels at 13 reps, 23 reps, and 38 reps. These examples come directly from the table values above.
Use the calculator to apply your exact inputs, place your result in the correct level, and see the next target without doing the table lookup yourself.
How the Reverse Lunge Calculator Works
The calculator uses your sex, age group, bodyweight, and total strict alternating reps. Count both sides together and enter one combined alternating-rep total. It compares that score with the exercise-specific Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Elite thresholds. Because higher is stronger for this test, more valid reps can move the result to a higher level.
The result shows your standards level, entered score, the sex and age group used, and your next target. An exact threshold counts as the higher level. Using the men’s age 20-29 reference row, 20 total alternating reps is Intermediate and Advanced begins at 36 total alternating reps, making the next target 16 additional strict reps. The calculator handles the tier lookup and target math automatically.
The calculator cannot inspect your attempt. It assumes the number entered follows the Reverse Lunge Testing Rules. If the attempt became invalid before you stopped, enter only the valid reps completed before the first invalid rep.
Reverse Lunge Testing Rules
Use one continuous alternating set and count both sides together. The calculator compares the number you enter with the Reverse Lunge standards, but it cannot verify how the attempt was performed. Use the exercise-specific requirements below before entering a score.
Reverse Lunge Testing Checklist
| Testing rule | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Exact test | One continuous set of alternating bodyweight reverse lunge reps from standing, counted as total reps across both legs. |
| Start | Stand tall with both feet on the floor, no hand support, and enough space to step backward safely. |
| Valid range or position | Each rep steps backward into a lunge deep enough that the front knee bends clearly and the back knee lowers close to the floor without bouncing off it; then the athlete returns to full standing control. |
| Count or time | Count one rep each time a backward lunge reaches approved depth and returns to standing; do not count partial reps, failed returns, balance resets, or reps from a different variation. |
| Tempo and pauses | No fixed tempo applies, but reps must be controlled enough to show the bottom position and standing return; long rests that turn the set into repeated singles do not count. |
| Assistance | No hand support on a wall, rack, thighs, chair, partner, straps, handles, or added weight. |
| Stop | Every counted rep finishes standing tall before the next rep begins. |
| Retest consistently | Keep retests comparable by using the same stance, floor surface, footwear or barefoot convention, depth rule, and alternating pattern. |
What Counts and What Does Not Count
Enter only the exact Reverse Lunge test described in the checklist. The examples below separate that test from common substitutions that use different loading, assistance, range, position, equipment, or counting rules.
| Attempt or variation | Enter it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Reverse Lunge | Yes | This is the exact exercise when it follows every start, range or position, counting or timing, assistance, and stop rule above. |
| walking lunge, forward lunge, lateral lunge | No | These are nearby movements or positions, but they are not the same test. |
| dumbbell reverse lunge, kettlebell reverse lunge, barbell reverse lunge | No | Added resistance changes the exercise and the meaning of the score. |
| wall-supported reverse lunge, rack-supported reverse lunge, chair-assisted lunge | No | External support changes the work required and makes the result noncomparable. |
| short-step shallow reverse lunge, half-depth lunge, knee-bounce lunge | No | Altered range, position, resets, or counting can inflate the entered result. |
| benches, boxes, sliders | No | A different setup can change support, leverage, range, or difficulty. |
When a call is borderline, stop the score before the first invalid rep and enter only the valid combined alternating total. That keeps Reverse Lunge results useful for comparison over time. Apply the same checklist every time you retest.
Elite Reverse Lunge Strength Levels
Elite begins when your total strict alternating-rep score meets or exceeds the Elite threshold for the applicable sex and age group. Because the tier boundary is lower-inclusive, a score exactly equal to the threshold counts as Elite. The table shows every public Elite starting point for Reverse Lunge.
| Reference group | Elite starts at |
|---|---|
| Men age 20-29 | 60 total alternating reps |
| Men age 30-39 | 54 total alternating reps |
| Men age 40-49 | 48 total alternating reps |
| Men age 50-59 | 39 total alternating reps |
| Men age 60+ | 30 total alternating reps |
| Women age 20-29 | 48 total alternating reps |
| Women age 30-39 | 43 total alternating reps |
| Women age 40-49 | 38 total alternating reps |
| Women age 50-59 | 31 total alternating reps |
| Women age 60+ | 24 total alternating reps |
An Elite result still has to follow the same Reverse Lunge Testing Rules; if the attempt became invalid earlier, use only the valid reps completed before the first invalid rep. After Elite, the calculator can show a separate rep stretch target when one is available, but that target does not replace or redefine the Elite threshold.
Milestones and Next Targets
Your next Reverse Lunge target is the first strength-level threshold above your current valid rep score. The calculator uses your selected sex, age group, bodyweight, and total strict alternating reps, subtracts your result from that threshold, and shows the exact additional strict reps needed.
The table shows the complete jumps between level starting points for the age 20–29 reference group; your personal gap may be smaller because it begins from your current result rather than the previous level’s minimum.
| Progression | Men age 20-29 | Women age 20-29 |
|---|---|---|
| Novice → Intermediate | +12 strict alternating reps | +10 strict alternating reps |
| Intermediate → Advanced | +16 strict alternating reps | +13 strict alternating reps |
| Advanced → Elite | +24 strict alternating reps | +19 strict alternating reps |
