Leg Press (45° Sled) vs Smith Machine Paused Squat Strength Standards

Compare your leg press and smith machine paused squat against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Enter 1–12 reps for estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, priority.

First lift: total plates loaded on the 45-degree sled and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, keep both feet flat and approximately shoulder-width, descend until the thighs reach at least parallel to the platform without lifting the hips or rounding the lower back. For the second exercise, hold that position motionless for two continuous seconds while maintaining muscular tension and foot pressure; no rebound, further sinking, relaxation, or safety-stop contact. Heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

How Your Leg Press vs Smith Machine Paused Squat Result Is Calculated

The calculator estimates both one-rep maxes, rates each one against its exercise and bodyweight standards, and then compares the two ratings.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

A one-rep set uses the entered weight. For 2–12 reps, both formulas are calculated and the lower estimate is retained.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

Use recent Leg Press and Smith Machine Paused Squat sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.

2. Find the 45-degree leg press strength level

For 45-degree leg press, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

Two-thirds scaling raises the target as bodyweight rises while limiting the size advantage that a direct one-to-one adjustment would create.

3. Find the smith machine paused squat strength level

The smith machine paused squat rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.

4. Compare the two results

Strength level decides the comparison first. Matching levels remain Balanced unless progress toward the next target differs by at least 10 points.

Treat the result as a training comparison rather than an explanation of why one lift trails. Set quality, fatigue, skill, and training exposure all matter. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.

Leg Press and Smith Machine Paused Squat Exercises Used by This Calculator

Compare like-for-like attempts by keeping the 45-degree leg press and smith machine paused squat setup consistent with their individual rules. Use strict, repeatable Leg Press and Smith Machine Paused Squat tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.

Use a 45-degree plate-loaded sled leg press

Keep both feet flat and approximately shoulder-width, descend until the thighs reach at least parallel to the platform without lifting the hips or rounding the lower back, and press to controlled full knee extension. Do not enter a horizontal, vertical, selectorized, single-leg, high-foot, partial, bounced, or assisted press.

Use the Smith Machine Paused Squat setup and load convention

Use Smith rails vertical within 1 degree and a non-counterbalanced bar. Measure actual unloaded resistance and enter it plus all plates on both sleeves. Center the bar on the upper trapezius. Set heel centers at measured hip-joint width; outward toe angle is permitted. Position feet so bar center is vertically over midfoot at bottom. Descend until both hip creases are below the top of the knees. Hold that position motionless for two continuous seconds while maintaining muscular tension and foot pressure; no rebound, further sinking, relaxation, or safety-stop contact. Rise to simultaneous hip/knee lockout without heel rise, rehooking, or asymmetry. Count 1–10 reps, each independently paused. Belt/sleeves/chalk/shoes allowed; rebound wraps, suits, assistance, and partials prohibited.
