Leg Press (45° Sled) vs Smith Machine Deadlift Strength Standards

Compare your leg press and smith machine deadlift against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Enter 1–12 reps for estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, priority.

First lift: total plates loaded on the 45-degree sled and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, keep both feet flat and approximately shoulder-width, descend until the thighs reach at least parallel to the platform without lifting the hips or rounding the lower back. For the second exercise, pull without prestretch rebound to simultaneous hip/knee extension with trunk upright and shoulders behind the bar-center line; lower under control to a complete stop without bouncing, resting mid-rep. Heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

Leg Press vs Smith Machine Deadlift Strength Standards

Use these tables to compare the estimated one-rep max required for the 45-degree leg press and smith machine deadlift to reach the same strength level at each listed bodyweight. The numbers are calculator targets, not a required gap between the two lifts.

Choose the men’s or women’s table, find the closest bodyweight row, and read across to Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, or Elite. Each entry shows Leg Press / Smith Machine Deadlift, with pounds above kilograms. Use the calculator for your exact bodyweight and recent sets.

How Your Leg Press vs Smith Machine Deadlift Result Is Calculated

Both lifts are scored independently first: estimated max, bodyweight-adjusted strength level, and progress toward the next level. Those ratings drive the comparison.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

When the set contains one rep, the entered load is the estimate. For 2–12 reps, the calculator keeps the less aggressive of the two formula results.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

Set quality matters for this Leg Press vs Smith Machine Deadlift comparison. Enter technically consistent, challenging sets, and prefer lower-rep results when practical because the estimate extends less far beyond the performed set.

2. Find the 45-degree leg press strength level

The leg press standards use the sex-specific standards from the individual Leg Press tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

Two-thirds scaling raises the target as bodyweight rises while limiting the size advantage that a direct one-to-one adjustment would create.

3. Find the smith machine deadlift strength level

The standards use the sex-specific thresholds from the individual Smith Machine Deadlift tool.

4. Compare the two results

The lift with the lower Beginner-to-Elite rating is the priority. If both ratings match, the calculator requires a 10-point difference in next-level progress before naming a priority; otherwise it reports Balanced.

The result identifies the lower standards rating, not its cause. Technique, fatigue, training history, and set quality can all affect the comparison. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.

StageWhat happens
Estimate each maxUse the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result.
Rate the leg pressAdjust 45-degree leg press targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule.
Rate the smith machine deadliftUse the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Compare different levelsName the lower-level lift as the priority.
Compare matching levelsUse Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points.

The calculator above applies these steps to your exact entries and reports both lift ratings, both next targets, and the final comparison.

Leg Press and Smith Machine Deadlift Exercises Used by This Calculator

Compare like-for-like attempts by keeping the 45-degree leg press and smith machine deadlift setup consistent with their individual rules. Use strict, repeatable Leg Press and Smith Machine Deadlift tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.

Use a 45-degree plate-loaded sled leg press

Keep both feet flat and approximately shoulder-width, descend until the thighs reach at least parallel to the platform without lifting the hips or rounding the lower back, and press to controlled full knee extension. Do not enter a horizontal, vertical, selectorized, single-leg, high-foot, partial, bounced, or assisted press.

Use the Smith Machine Deadlift setup and load convention

Use a Smith machine whose rails are vertical within 1 degree. The bar must be non-counterbalanced. Measure actual unloaded upward resistance with a calibrated force scale at mid-shin travel; enter that resistance plus every plate on both sleeves, never a nominal bar mass or one side alone. Set hard safety stops so the bar center begins 22.5 cm plus or minus 0.5 cm above the lifting platform. The bar rests motionless on the stops before each rep; hooks remain disengaged throughout the set. Set heel centers at measured hip-joint width, toes as needed, and bar vertically over midfoot. Grip pronated or mixed immediately outside the legs; use the same grip throughout. Pull without prestretch rebound to simultaneous hip/knee extension with trunk upright and shoulders behind the bar-center line; lower under control to a complete stop without bouncing, resting mid-rep, or rehooking. Count 1–10 reps without stance/grip change, bar-stop rebound, hitching, thigh support, hyperextension, asymmetry, or assistance. Belt/chalk allowed; straps/hooks prohibited.
