Front Squat vs Plie Dumbbell Squat Strength Standards
Compare your barbell front squat and plie dumbbell squat against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Enter one recent set of 1–12 reps for each lift to see your estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and which lift you should prioritize.
Use the correct input for each exercise: Total barbell weight and a whole number from 1 to 12 reps for Barbell Front Squat and Weight used and a whole number from 1 to 12 reps for Plie Dumbbell Squat. Use a barbell front squat with a stable front rack, upright controlled descent below parallel, and full standing lockout and the entered weight for strict Plie Dumbbell Squat. You can enter either lift in pounds or kilograms. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.
Barbell Front Squat vs Plie Dumbbell Squat Strength Standards by Bodyweight
These bodyweight tables place the barbell front squat and plie dumbbell squat targets side by side from Novice through Elite. Use them to compare standards, not to force a particular ratio between the lifts.
Find the closest row in the men’s or women’s table. Every target lists Barbell Front Squat / Plie Dumbbell Squat, pounds first and kilograms second. Enter your own sets above for exact ratings without testing a true one-rep max.

How Your Barbell Front Squat vs Plie Dumbbell Squat Result Is Calculated
The calculator estimates both one-rep maxes, rates each one against its exercise and bodyweight standards, and then compares the two ratings.
1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set
The entered weight is used directly for one rep. With 2–12 reps, both estimates are compared and the lower value is used.
- Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
- Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)
Use recent Barbell Front Squat and Plie Dumbbell Squat sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.
2. Find the barbell front squat strength level
The barbell front squat rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.
3. Find the plie dumbbell squat strength level
The standards use the sex-specific thresholds from the individual Plie Dumbbell Squat tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so larger lifters are expected to lift more without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.
4. Compare the two results
Each max receives a level from Beginner through Elite. The lower-level lift becomes the priority. At matching levels, a priority appears only when one lift is at least 10 points farther from its next level; otherwise the result is Balanced.
The result identifies the lower standards rating, not its cause. Technique, fatigue, training history, and set quality can all affect the comparison. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Estimate each max | Use the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result. |
| Rate the barbell front squat | Use total-barbell estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule. |
| Rate the plie dumbbell squat | Use the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule. |
| Compare different levels | Name the lower-level lift as the priority. |
| Compare matching levels | Use Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points. |
How Men’s Barbell Front Squat and Plie Dumbbell Squat Standards Differ
How to read both charts: Choose a strength level, find bodyweight along the bottom, and follow that level’s line. Zero means the two standards are equal. Above zero means the plie dumbbell squat standard is higher; below zero means the barbell front squat standard is higher. On a phone, swipe the chart left and right to inspect the full-size lines and labels. The tables provide the exact pounds and kilograms.
What the men’s data shows:
The standards come closest at 120 lb.
The higher target remains with Barbell Front Squat for Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Elite throughout the table.
At Elite, the difference is 49 kg at 120 lb and 90.3 kg at 300 lb.
How to read the table: Every number is the plie dumbbell squat standard minus the barbell front squat standard. A plus sign means the plie dumbbell squat standard is higher. A minus sign means the barbell front squat standard is higher.

Barbell Front Squat and Plie Dumbbell Squat Exercises Used by This Calculator
The calculator expects repeatable barbell front squat and plie dumbbell squat results. Follow each exercise definition below so the two ratings are based on valid tests. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Front Squat and Plie Dumbbell Squat tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.
Keep the bar in the front rack through full depth
Enter the bar plus all plates. Support the bar across the front of the shoulders, descend under control until the hip crease is below the top of the knee, and stand to full lockout while retaining the front rack. Do not enter per-side plates, back squats, Zercher or goblet squats, Smith or machine squats, partial reps, assisted reps, or reps that lose the front rack.
Use the Plie Dumbbell Squat setup and load convention
The entered weight for strict Plie Dumbbell Squat. Valid Plie Dumbbell Squat reps. Descend under control into the wide-stance squat while knees track with the feet, then stand to full hip and knee extension without turning the rep into a hinge pull and finish in a valid position that shows full standing control with the dumbbell secure and no thigh support, hand support, bounce, partial depth, or sumo-deadlift mechanics. Consistent setup, range, and finish quality across the entered set. No substituted exercise or assisted reps.
