Dumbbell Lunge vs Keg Bear-Hug Squat
Compare your dumbbell lunge and keg bear-hug squat against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Enter one recent set of 1–12 reps for each lift to see estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.
First lift: combined dumbbell load and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, use one forward or reverse lunge direction for the set, reach at least parallel front-thigh depth with the back knee near the floor, and return to stable standing. For the second exercise, pickup/setup is unscored and may use assistance, but assistance ends before standing start; reset stable hold before each rep. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

How Your Dumbbell Lunge vs Keg Bear-Hug Squat Result Is Calculated
The calculator estimates both one-rep maxes, rates each one against its exercise and bodyweight standards, and then compares the two ratings.
1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set
A one-rep set uses the entered weight. For 2–12 reps, both formulas are calculated and the lower estimate is retained.
- Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
- Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)
Use recent Dumbbell Lunge and Keg Bear-Hug Squat sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.
2. Find the dumbbell lunge strength level
The standards use the sex-specific combined-load thresholds from the individual Dumbbell Lunge tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
Two-thirds scaling raises the target as bodyweight rises while limiting the size advantage that a direct one-to-one adjustment would create.
3. Find the keg bear-hug squat strength level
The keg bear-hug squat rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so larger lifters are expected to lift more without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.
4. Compare the two results
Each max receives a level from Beginner through Elite. The lower-level lift becomes the priority. At matching levels, a priority appears only when one lift is at least 10 points farther from its next level; otherwise the result is Balanced.
The result identifies the lower standards rating, not its cause. Technique, fatigue, training history, and set quality can all affect the comparison. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Estimate each max | Use the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result. |
| Rate the dumbbell lunge | Use combined-dumbbell estimated max and adjust targets with the two-thirds rule. |
| Rate the keg bear-hug squat | Use the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule. |
| Compare different levels | Name the lower-level lift as the priority. |
| Compare matching levels | Use Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points. |

Dumbbell Lunge and Keg Bear-Hug Squat Exercises Used by This Calculator
The calculator expects repeatable dumbbell lunge and keg bear-hug squat results. Follow each exercise definition below so the two ratings are based on valid tests. Use strict, repeatable Dumbbell Lunge and Keg Bear-Hug Squat tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.
Enter combined load from two matched dumbbells
Use one forward or reverse lunge direction for the set, reach at least parallel front-thigh depth with the back knee near the floor, and return to stable standing. Do not enter per-hand load, stationary split squats, walking or Bulgarian lunges, support, bounce, partial reps, or substitutions.
Use the Keg Bear-Hug Squat setup and load convention
Use one THIELMANN US 1/2-barrel stainless keg: 15.5 US gal, 15.55 in diameter, 23.22 in high, 29.75 lb nominal tare; no external lifting handles or attachments. Weigh fully prepared closed keg; enter actual total mass including keg, closure, and contents. Position it upright with base down and valve opening centered at top. Before each scored rep, stand fully with keg vertical against anterior trunk, its base clear of thighs/belt, and both arms wrapped around shell; forearms/hands may overlap or clasp but may not grip chimes, valve/opening, or support keg from beneath. Maintain materially same shell-only bear hug and upright keg orientation throughout. Descend under control until hip crease is below top of knee at deepest point. Ascend without bounce, external contact, hand/arm repositioning, or keg support on thighs/belt. Finish motionless with knees/hips extended and trunk erect while maintaining hold. Pickup/setup is unscored and may use assistance, but assistance ends before standing start; reset stable hold before each rep. Whole reps 1–10. Allowed exact keg/fill, belt worn without supporting keg, sleeves/wraps, wrist tape, chalk, shoes.
