Dumbbell Lunge vs Barbell Pin Squat
Compare your dumbbell lunge and barbell pin squat against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Use one clean 1–12-rep set per lift to review estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.
First lift: combined dumbbell load and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: total barbell load and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, use one forward or reverse lunge direction for the set, reach at least parallel front-thigh depth with the back knee near the floor, and return to stable standing. For the second exercise, rack pins fixed at valid squat depth. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

Use these tables to compare the estimated one-rep max required for the dumbbell lunge and barbell pin squat to reach the same strength level at each listed bodyweight. The numbers are calculator targets, not a required gap between the two lifts.
Choose the men’s or women’s table, find the closest bodyweight row, and read across to Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, or Elite. Each entry shows Dumbbell Lunge / Barbell Pin Squat, with pounds above kilograms. Use the calculator for your exact bodyweight and recent sets.

How Your Dumbbell Lunge vs Barbell Pin Squat Result Is Calculated
Both lifts are scored independently first: estimated max, bodyweight-adjusted strength level, and progress toward the next level. Those ratings drive the comparison.
1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set
The entered weight is used directly for one rep. With 2–12 reps, both estimates are compared and the lower value is used.
- Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
- Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)
Use recent Dumbbell Lunge and Barbell Pin Squat sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.
2. Find the dumbbell lunge strength level
For dumbbell lunge, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
Two-thirds scaling raises the target as bodyweight rises while limiting the size advantage that a direct one-to-one adjustment would create.
3. Find the barbell pin squat strength level
The barbell pin squat rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.
4. Compare the two results
Strength level decides the comparison first. Matching levels remain Balanced unless progress toward the next target differs by at least 10 points.
Treat the result as a training comparison rather than an explanation of why one lift trails. Set quality, fatigue, skill, and training exposure all matter. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Estimate each max | Use the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result. |
| Rate the dumbbell lunge | Use combined-dumbbell estimated max and adjust targets with the two-thirds rule. |
| Rate the barbell pin squat | Use the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule. |
| Compare different levels | Name the lower-level lift as the priority. |
| Compare matching levels | Use Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points. |
Use the calculator above to view both estimated maxes, strength levels, next targets, and the resulting priority or Balanced verdict.

Dumbbell Lunge and Barbell Pin Squat Exercises Used by This Calculator
Compare like-for-like attempts by keeping the dumbbell lunge and barbell pin squat setup consistent with their individual rules. Use strict, repeatable Dumbbell Lunge and Barbell Pin Squat tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.
Enter combined load from two matched dumbbells
Use one forward or reverse lunge direction for the set, reach at least parallel front-thigh depth with the back knee near the floor, and return to stable standing. Do not enter per-hand load, stationary split squats, walking or Bulgarian lunges, support, bounce, partial reps, or substitutions.
Use the Barbell Pin Squat setup and load convention
Straight barbell on the upper back. Rack pins fixed at valid squat depth. Hip crease reaches knee level at pin contact. Controlled descent to clear pin contact. Pause or dead stop before ascent. Maintain brace and position on the pins. No bounced pin contact or uncontrolled drops. No bottom-start Anderson squat substitutions. No rack pulling, hand support, or machine guidance. Stand to full hip and knee lockout. Use the same pin height and stance style. No high-pin partials, box support, equipped gear, or assisted reps.
