Deadlift vs Sumo Deadlift With Bands Strength Standards
Compare your barbell deadlift and sumo deadlift with bands against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Enter one recent set of 1–12 reps for each lift to see estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.
First lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, start every rep with the bar motionless on the floor and finish standing with the hips and knees straight. For the second exercise, complete strict sumo deadlift with bands repetitions through full range with a stable setup, controlled weight, and no assistance. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

How Your Barbell Deadlift vs Sumo Deadlift with Bands Result Is Calculated
Each set is converted to an estimated max before the calculator assigns exercise-specific strength levels and compares them.
1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set
A one-rep set uses the entered weight. For 2–12 reps, both formulas are calculated and the lower estimate is retained.
- Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
- Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)
Use recent Barbell Deadlift and Sumo Deadlift with Bands sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.
2. Find the barbell deadlift strength level
The barbell deadlift rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.
3. Find the sumo deadlift with bands strength level
The sumo deadlift with bands rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
Two-thirds scaling raises the target as bodyweight rises while limiting the size advantage that a direct one-to-one adjustment would create.
4. Compare the two results
Strength level decides the comparison first. Matching levels remain Balanced unless progress toward the next target differs by at least 10 points.
The result identifies the lower standards rating, not its cause. Technique, fatigue, training history, and set quality can all affect the comparison. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Estimate each max | Use the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result. |
| Rate the barbell deadlift | Adjust barbell deadlift targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule. |
| Rate the sumo deadlift with bands | Use the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule. |
| Compare different levels | Name the lower-level lift as the priority. |
| Compare matching levels | Use Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points. |
The calculator above applies these steps to your exact entries and reports both lift ratings, both next targets, and the final comparison.

Barbell Deadlift and Sumo Deadlift with Bands Exercises Used by This Calculator
Compare like-for-like attempts by keeping the barbell deadlift and sumo deadlift with bands setup consistent with their individual rules. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Deadlift and Sumo Deadlift with Bands tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.
Use a conventional barbell deadlift from the floor
Start every rep with the bar motionless on the floor and finish standing with the hips and knees straight. Do not bounce the bar, use touch-and-go reps, hitch it up the thighs, or enter a rack pull, block pull, trap-bar deadlift, Romanian deadlift, machine variation, or equipped result.
Use the Sumo Deadlift with Bands setup and load convention
The entered weight for strict Sumo Deadlift with Bands. Valid Sumo Deadlift with Bands reps. Pull from the floor to a full standing sumo deadlift lockout while the bands remain symmetrical and under the same setup tension, then lower under control to the floor and finish with A valid finish requires full hip and knee extension, shoulders controlled, bar stable, no hitching, no ramping on the thighs, and no asymmetrical band assistance. Consistent setup, range, and finish quality across the entered set. No substituted exercise or assisted reps.
