Deadlift vs Smith Machine Deficit Deadlift Strength Standards

Compare your barbell deadlift and smith machine deficit deadlift against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Add a recent 1–12-rep result for each lift to compare estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.

First lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, start every rep with the bar motionless on the floor and finish standing with the hips and knees straight. For the second exercise, stand on one rigid nonslip platform exactly 5.0 cm plus or minus 0.2 cm above base floor. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

Barbell Deadlift vs Smith Machine Deficit Deadlift Strength Standards

These bodyweight tables place the barbell deadlift and smith machine deficit deadlift targets side by side from Novice through Elite. Use them to compare standards, not to force a particular ratio between the lifts.

Find the closest row in the men’s or women’s table. Every target lists Barbell Deadlift / Smith Machine Deficit Deadlift, pounds first and kilograms second. Enter your own sets above for exact ratings without testing a true one-rep max.

How Your Barbell Deadlift vs Smith Machine Deficit Deadlift Result Is Calculated

Each set is converted to an estimated max before the calculator assigns exercise-specific strength levels and compares them.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

A one-rep set uses the entered weight. For 2–12 reps, both formulas are calculated and the lower estimate is retained.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

For the most useful Barbell Deadlift vs Smith Machine Deficit Deadlift comparison, enter clean, difficult sets performed with the same technique and range of motion you use in training. Lower-rep sets usually require less extrapolation.

2. Find the barbell deadlift strength level

The barbell deadlift rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.

3. Find the smith machine deficit deadlift strength level

The smith machine deficit deadlift rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so larger lifters are expected to lift more without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.

4. Compare the two results

The lift with the lower Beginner-to-Elite rating is the priority. If both ratings match, the calculator requires a 10-point difference in next-level progress before naming a priority; otherwise it reports Balanced.

Treat the result as a training comparison rather than an explanation of why one lift trails. Set quality, fatigue, skill, and training exposure all matter. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.

Rate the smith machine deficit deadliftUse the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Compare different levelsName the lower-level lift as the priority.

Barbell Deadlift and Smith Machine Deficit Deadlift Exercises Used by This Calculator

Compare like-for-like attempts by keeping the barbell deadlift and smith machine deficit deadlift setup consistent with their individual rules. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Deadlift and Smith Machine Deficit Deadlift tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.

Use a conventional barbell deadlift from the floor

Start every rep with the bar motionless on the floor and finish standing with the hips and knees straight. Do not bounce the bar, use touch-and-go reps, hitch it up the thighs, or enter a rack pull, block pull, trap-bar deadlift, Romanian deadlift, machine variation, or equipped result.

Use the Smith Machine Deficit Deadlift setup and load convention

Use Smith rails vertical within 1 degree and a non-counterbalanced bar. Measure unloaded resistance and enter it plus all plates on both sleeves. Stand on one rigid nonslip platform exactly 5.0 cm plus or minus 0.2 cm above base floor. Set hard stops so bar center is 22.5 cm plus or minus 0.5 cm above base floor, yielding 17.5 cm relative height above platform. Bar rests motionless before each rep. Set heel centers at measured hip-joint width and bar over midfoot. Grip immediately outside legs using consistent pronated or mixed grip. Pull to simultaneous hip/knee extension with trunk upright and shoulders behind bar-center line; lower to complete stop without bouncing, rehooking, or resting above stops. Count 1–8 reps without platform/stance/grip change, stop rebound, hitching, thigh support, hyperextension, asymmetry, or assistance. Belt/chalk allowed; straps/hooks prohibited.
