Barbell Snatch vs Barbell Snatch Balance Strength Standards

Compare your barbell snatch and barbell snatch balance against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Add a recent 1–12-rep result for each lift to compare estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.

First lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, pull the bar from the floor, transition through the second pull, receive it overhead in a stable squat or power position, then stand to completion. For the second exercise, dip and drive the bar overhead while dropping into an overhead squat receiving position, then stand fully. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

How Your Barbell Snatch vs Barbell Snatch Balance Result Is Calculated

Each set is converted to an estimated max before the calculator assigns exercise-specific strength levels and compares them.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

A one-rep set uses the entered weight. For 2–12 reps, both formulas are calculated and the lower estimate is retained.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

Use recent Barbell Snatch and Barbell Snatch Balance sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.

2. Find the barbell snatch strength level

The barbell snatch rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so larger lifters are expected to lift more without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.

3. Find the barbell snatch balance strength level

The barbell snatch balance rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.

4. Compare the two results

Strength level decides the comparison first. Matching levels remain Balanced unless progress toward the next target differs by at least 10 points.

A priority result is a standards comparison, not a diagnosis. Differences in technique, fatigue, practice, or set effort may influence it. Age range is recorded anonymously and does not alter these standards.

StageWhat happens
Estimate each maxUse the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result.
Rate the barbell snatchUse the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Rate the barbell snatch balanceUse the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Compare different levelsName the lower-level lift as the priority.
Compare matching levelsUse Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points.

Barbell Snatch and Barbell Snatch Balance Exercises Used by This Calculator

Valid results depend on using the specified barbell snatch and barbell snatch balance technique and load convention. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Snatch and Barbell Snatch Balance tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and weight-entry rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different weight conventions.

Use the Barbell Snatch setup and load convention

The entered weight for strict Barbell Snatch. Valid Barbell Snatch reps. Pull the bar from the floor, transition through the second pull, receive it overhead in a stable squat or power position, then stand to completion. A valid finish requires elbows locked, bar controlled overhead, hips and knees extended, and the lifter stable before lowering. Consistent setup, range, and finish quality across the entered set. No substituted exercise or assisted reps.

Use the Barbell Snatch Balance setup and load convention

The entered weight for strict Barbell Snatch Balance. Valid Barbell Snatch Balance reps. Dip and drive the bar overhead while dropping into an overhead squat receiving position, then stand fully. A valid finish requires locked elbows, stable overhead bar, full squat receiving control if used, and complete standing recovery. Consistent setup, range, and finish quality across the entered set. No substituted exercise or assisted reps.
