Barbell Snatch Balance vs Overhead Squat Strength Standards

Compare your barbell snatch balance and overhead squat against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Use one clean 1–12-rep set per lift to review estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.

First lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: external load and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, dip and drive the bar overhead while dropping into an overhead squat receiving position, then stand fully. For the second exercise, follow the individual Overhead Squat calculator’s exercise-specific setup, load convention, range of motion, and finish rules. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

Barbell Snatch Balance vs Overhead Squat Strength Standards

Use these tables to compare the estimated one-rep max required for the barbell snatch balance and overhead squat to reach the same strength level at each listed bodyweight. The numbers are calculator targets, not a required gap between the two lifts.

Choose the men’s or women’s table, find the closest bodyweight row, and read across to Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, or Elite. Each entry shows Barbell Snatch Balance / Overhead Squat, with pounds above kilograms. Use the calculator for your exact bodyweight and recent sets.

How Your Barbell Snatch Balance vs Overhead Squat Result Is Calculated

Each set is converted to an estimated max before the calculator assigns exercise-specific strength levels and compares them.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

When the set contains one rep, the entered load is the estimate. For 2–12 reps, the calculator keeps the less aggressive of the two formula results.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

Use recent Barbell Snatch Balance and Overhead Squat sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.

2. Find the barbell snatch balance strength level

The barbell snatch balance rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so larger lifters are expected to lift more without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.

3. Find the overhead squat strength level

The standards use the sex-specific targets from the individual Overhead Squat tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so heavier lifters are expected to lift more without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.

4. Compare the two results

The lift with the lower Beginner-to-Elite rating is the priority. If both ratings match, the calculator requires a 10-point difference in next-level progress before naming a priority; otherwise it reports Balanced.

Treat the result as a training comparison rather than an explanation of why one lift trails. Set quality, fatigue, skill, and training exposure all matter. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.

StageWhat happens
Estimate each maxUse the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result.
Rate the barbell snatch balanceUse the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Rate the overhead squatAdjust overhead squat targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule.
Compare different levelsName the lower-level lift as the priority.
Compare matching levelsUse Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points.

Barbell Snatch Balance and Overhead Squat Exercises Used by This Calculator

For a useful comparison, perform a strict barbell snatch balance and a strict overhead squat using the setup and load rules below. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Snatch Balance and Overhead Squat tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and weight-entry rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different weight conventions.

Use the Barbell Snatch Balance setup and load convention

The entered weight for strict Barbell Snatch Balance. Valid Barbell Snatch Balance reps. Dip and drive the bar overhead while dropping into an overhead squat receiving position, then stand fully. A valid finish requires locked elbows, stable overhead bar, full squat receiving control if used, and complete standing recovery. Consistent setup, range, and finish quality across the entered set. No substituted exercise or assisted reps.

Use a strict, repeatable Overhead Squat

Follow the individual Overhead Squat calculator’s exercise-specific setup, load convention, range of motion, and finish rules. Keep the same setup when retesting.

Enter one recent Barbell Snatch Balance result and one recent Overhead Squat result

Enter the working weight and a whole number of strict repetitions for each exercise. Pounds and kilograms can be mixed.
