Barbell Power Clean vs Clean Deadlift Strength Standards
Compare your barbell power clean and clean deadlift against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Add a recent 1–12-rep result for each lift to compare estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.
First lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, begin every rep motionless on the floor, reach full extension, turn the bar over into a secure front rack above parallel, and stand tall. For the second exercise, pull a straight barbell from a motionless floor start to full standing with a consistent clean-style stance, grip, posture, and close bar path. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.
Barbell Power Clean vs Clean Deadlift Strength Standards
The paired standards below show what the power clean and clean deadlift each require at the same strength level. They are separate exercise targets rather than a prescribed difference between your lifts.
Select the appropriate sex table and nearest bodyweight, then choose a strength-level column. Values are ordered Power Clean / Clean Deadlift in pounds with kilograms underneath. The calculator above handles exact bodyweight and set inputs.

How Your Barbell Power Clean vs Clean Deadlift Result Is Calculated
The comparison starts by estimating each max separately. It then rates both lifts against their own standards before identifying the lower result.
1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set
A one-rep set uses the entered weight. For 2–12 reps, both formulas are calculated and the lower estimate is retained.
- Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
- Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)
Use recent Power Clean and Clean Deadlift sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.
2. Find the power clean strength level
The standards use the sex-specific levels from the individual Barbell Power Clean tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.
3. Find the clean deadlift strength level
For clean deadlift, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.
4. Compare the two results
Strength level decides the comparison first. Matching levels remain Balanced unless progress toward the next target differs by at least 10 points.
Treat the result as a training comparison rather than an explanation of why one lift trails. Set quality, fatigue, skill, and training exposure all matter. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Estimate each max | Use the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result. |
| Rate the power clean | Adjust power clean targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule. |
| Rate the clean deadlift | Adjust clean deadlift targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule. |
| Compare different levels | Name the lower-level lift as the priority. |
| Compare matching levels | Use Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points. |
How Men’s Barbell Power Clean and Clean Deadlift Standards Differ
What the men’s data shows:
The standards come closest at 120 lb.
Across all listed bodyweights, Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Elite keep the same higher-target direction.
56.7 → 104.7 kg from 120 to 300 lb bodyweight.
How to read this chart: Choose a strength level and follow its line across bodyweight. Values show the Clean Deadlift standard minus the Power Clean standard: zero means equal, above zero means the Clean Deadlift standard is higher, and below zero means the Power Clean standard is higher. How Women’s Barbell Power Clean and Clean Deadlift Standards Differ
What the women’s data shows:
The standards come closest at 100 lb.
The higher target remains with Clean Deadlift for Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Elite throughout the table.
At Elite, the difference is 28.6 kg at 100 lb and 50.8 kg at 240 lb.

Barbell Power Clean and Clean Deadlift Exercises Used by This Calculator
Compare like-for-like attempts by keeping the power clean and clean deadlift setup consistent with their individual rules. Use strict, repeatable Power Clean and Clean Deadlift tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and weight-entry rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different weight conventions.
Start from the floor and catch above parallel
Enter total barbell weight. Begin every rep motionless on the floor, reach full extension, turn the bar over into a secure front rack above parallel, and stand tall. Do not enter a hang clean, squat clean, muscle clean, high pull without a catch, bounced rep, press-out, strapped lift, or machine variation.
Use total barbell weight and a clean-style floor pull
Pull a straight barbell from a motionless floor start to full standing with a consistent clean-style stance, grip, posture, and close bar path. Enter total barbell weight. Do not add a clean-pull shrug or count conventional, sumo, power-clean, clean-and-jerk, partial, bounced, touch-and-go, hitched, or assisted reps.
Enter one recent Barbell Power Clean result and one recent Clean Deadlift result
Enter the working weight and a whole number of strict repetitions for each exercise. Pounds and kilograms can be mixed.
