Barbell Front Squat vs Cable Hack Squat

Compare your barbell front squat and cable hack squat against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Add a recent 1–12-rep result for each lift to compare estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.

First lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, support the bar across the front of the shoulders, descend under control until the hip crease is below the top of the knee. For the second exercise, hold one rigid straight attachment behind the thighs with a pronated 50 cm plus or minus 2 cm grip. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

Barbell Front Squat vs Cable Hack Squat Strength Standards

The paired standards below show what the barbell front squat and cable hack squat each require at the same strength level. They are separate exercise targets rather than a prescribed difference between your lifts.

Select the appropriate sex table and nearest bodyweight, then choose a strength-level column. Values are ordered Barbell Front Squat / Cable Hack Squat in pounds with kilograms underneath. The calculator above handles exact bodyweight and set inputs.

How Your Barbell Front Squat vs Cable Hack Squat Result Is Calculated

The comparison starts by estimating each max separately. It then rates both lifts against their own standards before identifying the lower result.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

A one-rep set uses the entered weight. For 2–12 reps, both formulas are calculated and the lower estimate is retained.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

For the most useful Barbell Front Squat vs Cable Hack Squat comparison, enter clean, difficult sets performed with the same technique and range of motion you use in training. Lower-rep sets usually require less extrapolation.

2. Find the barbell front squat strength level

For barbell front squat, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.

3. Find the cable hack squat strength level

For cable hack squat, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.

4. Compare the two results

Strength level decides the comparison first. Matching levels remain Balanced unless progress toward the next target differs by at least 10 points.

Treat the result as a training comparison rather than an explanation of why one lift trails. Set quality, fatigue, skill, and training exposure all matter. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.

StageWhat happens
Estimate each maxUse the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result.
Rate the barbell front squatUse total-barbell estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule.
Rate the cable hack squatUse the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Compare different levelsName the lower-level lift as the priority.
Compare matching levelsUse Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points.

The calculator above applies these steps to your exact entries and reports both lift ratings, both next targets, and the final comparison.

Barbell Front Squat and Cable Hack Squat Exercises Used by This Calculator

Compare like-for-like attempts by keeping the barbell front squat and cable hack squat setup consistent with their individual rules. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Front Squat and Cable Hack Squat tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.

Keep the bar in the front rack through full depth

Enter the bar plus all plates. Support the bar across the front of the shoulders, descend under control until the hip crease is below the top of the knee, and stand to full lockout while retaining the front rack. Do not enter per-side plates, back squats, Zercher or goblet squats, Smith or machine squats, partial reps, assisted reps, or reps that lose the front rack.

Use the Cable Hack Squat setup and load convention

Face away from one floor pulley centered on the body midline 60 cm plus or minus 2 cm behind the heel-center line. Set heel centers at measured hip-joint width; outward toe angle is permitted. Hold one rigid straight attachment behind the thighs with a pronated 50 cm plus or minus 2 cm grip. Elbows remain straight and the attachment remains posterior to the legs throughout. At simultaneous upright hip/knee lockout, inline-measure total attachment resistance and enter that value, not printed stack mass or per-side/per-hand weight. Squat with trunk within 15 degrees of vertical until both hip creases are below the top of the knees, then stand to simultaneous hip/knee lockout. Heels stay down and knees track over toes. The attachment may maintain light posterior-thigh contact but may not rest on the calves, floor, body support, or stops. Count 1–12 controlled reps without rebound, stance change, trunk collapse, arm bend, cable slack, or assistance.
