Barbell Front Squat vs Barbell Jefferson Squat
Compare your barbell front squat and barbell jefferson squat against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Add a recent 1–12-rep result for each lift to compare estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.
First lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, support the bar across the front of the shoulders, descend under control until the hip crease is below the top of the knee. For the second exercise, squat down to the bar with meaningful knee and hip flexion, stand to full hip and knee extension, keep the bar controlled between the legs. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

How Your Barbell Front Squat vs Barbell Jefferson Squat Result Is Calculated
Each set is converted to an estimated max before the calculator assigns exercise-specific strength levels and compares them.
1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set
When the set contains one rep, the entered load is the estimate. For 2–12 reps, the calculator keeps the less aggressive of the two formula results.
- Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
- Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)
Use recent Barbell Front Squat and Barbell Jefferson Squat sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.
2. Find the barbell front squat strength level
For barbell front squat, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.
3. Find the barbell jefferson squat strength level
The standards use the sex-specific thresholds from the individual Barbell Jefferson Squat tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so larger lifters are expected to lift more without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.
4. Compare the two results
Each max receives a level from Beginner through Elite. The lower-level lift becomes the priority. At matching levels, a priority appears only when one lift is at least 10 points farther from its next level; otherwise the result is Balanced.
A priority result is a standards comparison, not a diagnosis. Differences in technique, fatigue, practice, or set effort may influence it. Age range is recorded anonymously and does not alter these standards.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Estimate each max | Use the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result. |
| Rate the barbell front squat | Use total-barbell estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule. |
| Rate the barbell jefferson squat | Use the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule. |
| Compare different levels | Name the lower-level lift as the priority. |
| Compare matching levels | Use Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points. |
The calculator above applies these steps to your exact entries and reports both lift ratings, both next targets, and the final comparison.

Keep the bar in the front rack through full depth
Enter the bar plus all plates. Support the bar across the front of the shoulders, descend under control until the hip crease is below the top of the knee, and stand to full lockout while retaining the front rack. Do not enter per-side plates, back squats, Zercher or goblet squats, Smith or machine squats, partial reps, assisted reps, or reps that lose the front rack.
Use the Barbell Jefferson Squat setup and load convention
The entered weight for strict Barbell Jefferson Squat. Valid Barbell Jefferson Squat reps. Squat down to the bar with meaningful knee and hip flexion, stand to full hip and knee extension, keep the bar controlled between the legs, and avoid turning the attempt into a high-hip Jefferson Deadlift. A valid rep finishes standing tall with hips and knees fully extended, shoulders controlled, bar still in the hands, and no hitch, twist, step, or support assistance. Consistent setup, range, and finish quality across the entered set. No substituted exercise or assisted reps.
