Barbell Clean And Press vs Machine Lateral Raise
Compare your clean and press (barbell) and machine lateral raise against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Use one clean 1–12-rep set per lift to review estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.
First lift: total barbell load and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: displayed bilateral machine resistance and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, stand fully before starting the overhead press. For the second exercise, use the tested Machine Lateral Raise machine only. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.
Clean And Press (Barbell) vs Machine Lateral Raise Strength Standards
Use these tables to compare the estimated one-rep max required for the clean and press (barbell) and machine lateral raise to reach the same strength level at each listed bodyweight. The numbers are calculator targets, not a required gap between the two lifts.
Choose the men’s or women’s table, find the closest bodyweight row, and read across to Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, or Elite. Each entry shows Clean And Press (Barbell) / Machine Lateral Raise, with pounds above kilograms. Use the calculator for your exact bodyweight and recent sets.

How Your Clean And Press (Barbell) vs Machine Lateral Raise Result Is Calculated
The calculator estimates both one-rep maxes, rates each one against its exercise and bodyweight standards, and then compares the two ratings.
1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set
A one-rep set uses the entered weight. For 2–12 reps, both formulas are calculated and the lower estimate is retained.
- Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
- Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)
For the most useful Clean And Press (Barbell) vs Machine Lateral Raise comparison, enter clean, difficult sets performed with the same technique and range of motion you use in training. Lower-rep sets usually require less extrapolation.
2. Find the clean and press (barbell) strength level
The standards use the sex-specific thresholds from the individual Clean And Press (Barbell) tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
Two-thirds scaling raises the target as bodyweight rises while limiting the size advantage that a direct one-to-one adjustment would create.
3. Find the machine lateral raise strength level
The machine lateral raise rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.
4. Compare the two results
The lift with the lower Beginner-to-Elite rating is the priority. If both ratings match, the calculator requires a 10-point difference in next-level progress before naming a priority; otherwise it reports Balanced.
The result identifies the lower standards rating, not its cause. Technique, fatigue, training history, and set quality can all affect the comparison. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Estimate each max | Use the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result. |
| Rate the clean and press (barbell) | Use the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule. |
| Rate the machine lateral raise | Adjust bilateral machine lateral raise targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule. |
| Compare different levels | Name the lower-level lift as the priority. |
| Compare matching levels | Use Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points. |
Use the calculator above to view both estimated maxes, strength levels, next targets, and the resulting priority or Balanced verdict.
How Men’s Clean And Press (Barbell) and Machine Lateral Raise Standards Differ
What the men’s data shows:
The standards come closest at 120 lb.
The higher target remains with Clean And Press (Barbell) for Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Elite throughout the table.
At Elite, the difference is 17.7 kg at 120 lb and 32.6 kg at 300 lb.
How to read this chart: Choose a strength level and follow its line across bodyweight. Values show the Machine Lateral Raise standard minus the Clean And Press (Barbell) standard: zero means equal, above zero means the Machine Lateral Raise standard is higher, and below zero means the Clean And Press (Barbell) standard is higher. How Women’s Clean And Press (Barbell) and Machine Lateral Raise Standards Differ
What the women’s data shows:
The standards come closest at 100 lb.
The higher target remains with Clean And Press (Barbell) for Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Elite throughout the table.
Across 100–240 lb bodyweight, the Elite gap changes from 8.6 to 15.4 kg.

Clean And Press (Barbell) and Machine Lateral Raise Exercises Used by This Calculator
Compare like-for-like attempts by keeping the clean and press (barbell) and machine lateral raise setup consistent with their individual rules. Use strict, repeatable Clean And Press (Barbell) and Machine Lateral Raise tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.
Use the Clean And Press (Barbell) setup and load convention
Barbell starts on the floor from a dead stop. Clean each rep to a stable front rack. Stand fully before starting the overhead press. Press strictly; no dip, drive, jerk, or rebend. Lock out overhead with hips, knees, and elbows extended. Lower or reset under control before the next rep. No bouncing from the floor between reps. No hang cleans, thrusters, continental cleans, or axle variations. No dumbbells, kettlebells, machines, Smith machines, or straps.
Use the Machine Lateral Raise setup and load convention
Use the tested Machine Lateral Raise machine only. Enter external resistance for the set. Use matching units for bodyweight and resistance. Keep setup and range consistent. Count only strict controlled reps. Do not enter a different exercise result.
Enter one recent Clean And Press (Barbell) result and one recent Machine Lateral Raise result
