Barbell Back Squat vs Paused Barbell Back Squat Strength Standards

Compare your barbell squat and paused barbell back squat against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Enter one recent set of 1–12 reps for each lift to see estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.

First lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: total barbell load and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, keep the bar high on the traps, descend until the hip crease passes below the top of the knee, and stand to full hip and knee extension. For the second exercise, controlled descent until hip crease is below the top of the knee. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

Barbell Squat vs Paused Barbell Back Squat Strength Standards

Use these tables to compare the estimated one-rep max required for the barbell back squat and paused barbell back squat to reach the same strength level at each listed bodyweight. The numbers are calculator targets, not a required gap between the two lifts.

Choose the men’s or women’s table, find the closest bodyweight row, and read across to Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, or Elite. Each entry shows Barbell Squat / Paused Barbell Back Squat, with pounds above kilograms. Use the calculator for your exact bodyweight and recent sets.

How Your Barbell Squat vs Paused Barbell Back Squat Result Is Calculated

Each set is converted to an estimated max before the calculator assigns exercise-specific strength levels and compares them.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

The entered weight is used directly for one rep. With 2–12 reps, both estimates are compared and the lower value is used.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

Use recent Barbell Squat and Paused Barbell Back Squat sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.

2. Find the barbell back squat strength level

The standards use the sex-specific high-bar, full-depth back squat thresholds from the individual tool after its two-thirds scaling migration. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.

3. Find the paused barbell back squat strength level

The paused barbell back squat rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

Two-thirds scaling raises the target as bodyweight rises while limiting the size advantage that a direct one-to-one adjustment would create.

4. Compare the two results

The lift with the lower Beginner-to-Elite rating is the priority. If both ratings match, the calculator requires a 10-point difference in next-level progress before naming a priority; otherwise it reports Balanced.

The result identifies the lower standards rating, not its cause. Technique, fatigue, training history, and set quality can all affect the comparison. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.

StageWhat happens
Estimate each maxUse the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result.
Rate the barbell squatUse total-barbell estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule.
Rate the paused barbell back squatUse the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Compare different levelsName the lower-level lift as the priority.
Compare matching levelsUse Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points.

Barbell Squat and Paused Barbell Back Squat Exercises Used by This Calculator

For a useful comparison, perform a strict barbell back squat and a strict paused barbell back squat using the setup and load rules below. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Squat and Paused Barbell Back Squat tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and weight-entry rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different weight conventions.

Use a raw high-bar squat below parallel

Enter the bar plus all plates. Keep the bar high on the traps, descend until the hip crease passes below the top of the knee, and stand to full hip and knee extension. Do not enter per-side plates, low-bar, box, pin, partial, Smith-machine, hack-squat, wrapped, suited, or assisted results.

Use the exercise-specific Paused Barbell Back Squat setup and load convention

Barbell positioned across upper back (high-bar or low-bar allowed). Controlled descent until hip crease is below the top of the knee. Lifter pauses motionless at the bottom for ~1–2 seconds (no bounce or stretch reflex). Rep counts only if lifter stands fully upright with hips and knees fully extended. Consistent pause depth and duration across all reps and across tests. Raw lifting only. Allowed equipment: barbell, rack, optional belt and lifting shoes. Disallowed: touch-and-go squats, partial depth reps, Smith machine or machine-based squats. Estimated 1RM is calculated from the entered load and reps.
