What Your Arnold Press Result Means for Bradford Press
This calculator turns one strict Arnold Press result into a predicted Bradford Press 1RM. The result gives you a center estimate, a planning range, and a strength level for the Bradford Press only.
| Example | Arnold Press result | Estimated Arnold Press max | Predicted Bradford Press | Expected range | Target level |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 190 lb male | 55 lb per dumbbell × 8 | 137 lb | 126 lb | 111–134 lb | Elite |
| 150 lb female | 25 lb per dumbbell × 8 | 62 lb | 65 lb | 62–71 lb | Elite |
For the male example, 55 lb per dumbbell × 8 predicts 126 lb with a 111–134 lb range. The Elite label rates the predicted Bradford Press result; it does not rate the Arnold Press result.
How the Arnold Press to Bradford Press Conversion Works
The calculator keeps the source and target measurement rules separate: the source entry is weight per dumbbell, while the target result is weight used.
| Step | What the calculator does | Worked example |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Read the source load | Use weight per dumbbell exactly as entered. | 55 lb per dumbbell × 8 |
| 2. Estimate the source max | Convert the completed set into an estimated source 1RM using the calculator’s approved repetition rule. | 137 lb |
| 3. Map to the target press | Apply the Arnold Press-to-Bradford Press mapping (1.086 center coefficient for this male example). | 126 lb |
| 4. Show uncertainty | Calculate the lower and upper ends of the expected transfer range. | 111–134 lb |
| 5. Rate the target | Classify the unrounded center against Bradford Press standards. | Elite |
The conversion matches reviewed strength levels for these two exercises. It does not claim that their loads, repetitions, equipment, or execution are interchangeable—or that the center is guaranteed.
Arnold Press to Bradford Press Conversion Chart
This chart holds the source set at 5 strict reps. Every value is generated by the same calculation as the calculator.
| Arnold Press result | male estimate | male range | female estimate | female range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 lb per dumbbell × 5 | 62 lb | 55–66 lb | 71 lb | 68–77 lb |
| 45 lb per dumbbell × 5 | 93 lb | 83–99 lb | 106 lb | 101–116 lb |
| 60 lb per dumbbell × 5 | 124 lb | 110–132 lb | 142 lb | 135–154 lb |
| 75 lb per dumbbell × 5 | 155 lb | 138–165 lb | 177 lb | 169–193 lb |
| 105 lb per dumbbell × 5 | 218 lb | 193–231 lb | 248 lb | 236–270 lb |
| 120 lb per dumbbell × 5 | 249 lb | 220–264 lb | 284 lb | 270–309 lb |
The range reflects transfer uncertainty. Use the center to compare or plan, and use direct Bradford Press performance to learn your actual result.
Bradford Press Strength Standards
The calculator rates only the predicted Bradford Press result. These reference standards use the same bodyweights and sex profiles as the examples above.
| Bradford Press level | 190 lb male: weight used | 150 lb female: weight used |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | Below 42 lb | Below 22 lb |
| Novice | 42–60 lb | 22–33 lb |
| Intermediate | 61–85 lb | 34–48 lb |
| Advanced | 86–110 lb | 49–63 lb |
| Elite | 111 lb or more | 64 lb or more |
| Stretch benchmark | 133 lb | 78 lb |
The live calculator resolves the target standard for the bodyweight entered. The source exercise keeps its own separate standards.
Key Differences Between Arnold Press and Bradford Press
These exercises share relevant strength demands, but the differences below are why their raw numbers cannot be interchanged.
| Difference | Arnold Press | Bradford Press | Why it affects the estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exercise setup and action | both sides together dumbbell press, seated overhead press, rotational dumbbell press, front start press | bradford press using barbell | Source: Both sides together dumbbell press, seated overhead press, rotational dumbbell press, front start press. Target: Bradford press using barbell. The difference changes the strength or repetition capacity being measured. |
| Equipment and load convention | dumbbell, bench; Weight per dumbbell | barbell; Weight used | The exercises record resistance differently, so equal-looking numbers do not represent equal performance. |
| Valid repetition standard | Each rep begins seated with matched dumbbells held in front of the shoulders or upper chest. The dumbbells must press upward from the front-of-shoulder start while the hands rotate through the press. | Each counted cycle begins with the barbell controlled at the front shoulder/clavicle area. The bar moves from front shoulder position over the head to a controlled behind-neck position, then returns over the head to the front shoulder position. | Changing either repetition standard changes the exercise being compared and weakens the usefulness of the estimate. |
| Movement and setup | strict Arnold Press with both dumbbells pressed and rotated together. | strict Bradford Press. | The starting position and movement path determine the leverage and muscles that can contribute to a valid repetition. |
Getting and Using a Useful Arnold Press-to-Bradford Press Estimate
Source test: Each rep begins seated with matched dumbbells held in front of the shoulders or upper chest. The dumbbells must press upward from the front-of-shoulder start while the hands rotate through the press. A valid finish requires both elbows extended, dumbbells controlled overhead, shoulders stable, upper body stable, and no lower-body drive.
Target represented: Each counted cycle begins with the barbell controlled at the front shoulder/clavicle area. The bar moves from front shoulder position over the head to a controlled behind-neck position, then returns over the head to the front shoulder position. A valid rep finishes when the bar returns to the front shoulder position under control after passing behind the neck.
| Before calculating | What to do |
|---|---|
| Use a valid Arnold Press set | Each rep begins seated with matched dumbbells held in front of the shoulders or upper chest. The dumbbells must press upward from the front-of-shoulder start while the hands rotate through the press. |
| Use 1 to 10 strict repetitions | Enter one whole-number Arnold Press set inside the calculator’s approved repetition range. |
| Keep the measurement convention straight | Enter weight per dumbbell. Read the target as weight used. |
| Use the range for planning | Start Bradford Press practice near the conservative end and use the center as the main comparison point. |
| Retest under the same conditions | Keep the Arnold Press setup, range, way of recording resistance, and repetition standard consistent. |
Do not substitute Bradford Press results entered as Arnold Press results, Arnold Press repetitions performed with a changed setup or range, partial-range, assisted, or momentum-driven Arnold Press repetitions, resistance recorded differently from weight per dumbbell, multiple sets combined into one repetition total. Those are different tests, so their numbers do not belong in this conversion.
| Result component | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Predicted center | Use it as the main comparison point for the Arnold Press-to-Bradford Press estimate. |
| Low end of range | Use it as the conservative reference when beginning or resuming Bradford Press practice. |
| High end of range | Treat it as possible context—not a guaranteed result or attempt recommendation. |
| Bradford Press strength level | Use it only to understand where the predicted result falls against Bradford Press standards. |
| Direct Bradford Press result | Replace the prediction with the actual result once Bradford Press has been performed under the stated test. |
Example: 55 lb per dumbbell × 8 predicts 126 lb with a 111–134 lb range. Use 126 lb as the comparison point, treat 111 lb as the conservative edge, and do not interpret 134 lb as a recommended attempt. Once you record a strict Bradford Press result, use that direct result instead.
