Barbell High Pull vs Barbell Power Clean Strength Standards

Compare your barbell high pull and barbell power clean against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Enter one recent set of 1–12 reps for each lift to see estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.

First lift: total barbell load and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, lifters hinge at the hips with torso inclined forward at the start. For the second exercise, begin every rep motionless on the floor, reach full extension, turn the bar over into a secure front rack above parallel, and stand tall. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

Barbell High Pull vs Barbell Power Clean Strength Standards

These bodyweight tables place the barbell high pull and power clean targets side by side from Novice through Elite. Use them to compare standards, not to force a particular ratio between the lifts.

Find the closest row in the men’s or women’s table. Every target lists Barbell High Pull / Power Clean, pounds first and kilograms second. Enter your own sets above for exact ratings without testing a true one-rep max.

How Your Barbell High Pull vs Barbell Power Clean Result Is Calculated

Both lifts are scored independently first: estimated max, bodyweight-adjusted strength level, and progress toward the next level. Those ratings drive the comparison.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

When the set contains one rep, the entered load is the estimate. For 2–12 reps, the calculator keeps the less aggressive of the two formula results.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

Use recent Barbell High Pull and Power Clean sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.

2. Find the barbell high pull strength level

For barbell high pull, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.

3. Find the power clean strength level

The power clean rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.

4. Compare the two results

The lift with the lower Beginner-to-Elite rating is the priority. If both ratings match, the calculator requires a 10-point difference in next-level progress before naming a priority; otherwise it reports Balanced.

Treat the result as a training comparison rather than an explanation of why one lift trails. Set quality, fatigue, skill, and training exposure all matter. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.

StageWhat happens
Estimate each maxUse the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result.
Rate the barbell high pullUse the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Rate the power cleanAdjust power clean targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule.
Compare different levelsName the lower-level lift as the priority.
Compare matching levelsUse Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points.

The calculator above applies these steps to your exact entries and reports both lift ratings, both next targets, and the final comparison.

Barbell High Pull and Barbell Power Clean Exercises Used by This Calculator

Valid results depend on using the specified barbell high pull and power clean technique and load convention. Use strict, repeatable Barbell High Pull and Power Clean tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and weight-entry rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different weight conventions.

Use the Barbell High Pull setup and load convention

Use the following execution standard:. Barbell starts on the floor for every rep (dead stop). Clean grip (shoulder-width) is required for all tests. Lifters hinge at the hips with torso inclined forward at the start. Explosive hip extension drives the bar upward. Bar travels vertically close to the body. Elbows rise up and out, finishing above the wrists. Bar must reach at least lower chest height. No turnover into a catch (this is not a clean). Bar returns fully to the floor between reps with no bounce. Rep counts only if the bar reaches consistent height and returns under control. Raw lifting only. Disallowed variations:. Hang high pulls (no floor start). Power cleans or clean pulls. Snatch-grip high pulls (separate tool). Partial pulls that do not reach chest height. Barbell shrugs. Smith machine or machine-based variations. Mixed grip or inconsistent grip between tests.

Start from the floor and catch above parallel

Enter total barbell weight. Begin every rep motionless on the floor, reach full extension, turn the bar over into a secure front rack above parallel, and stand tall. Do not enter a hang clean, squat clean, muscle clean, high pull without a catch, bounced rep, press-out, strapped lift, or machine variation.
