Dumbbell Lunge vs Smith Machine Low-Bar Squat

Compare your dumbbell lunge and smith machine low-bar squat against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Enter 1–12 reps for estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, priority.

First lift: combined dumbbell load and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, use one forward or reverse lunge direction for the set, reach at least parallel front-thigh depth with the back knee near the floor, and return to stable standing. For the second exercise, descend until both hip creases are below the top of the knees; stand to simultaneous hip/knee lockout without heel rise, bar-shelf change, excessive good-morning recovery, rehooking. Heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

How Your Dumbbell Lunge vs Smith Machine Low-Bar Squat Result Is Calculated

The calculator estimates both one-rep maxes, rates each one against its exercise and bodyweight standards, and then compares the two ratings.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

A one-rep set uses the entered weight. For 2–12 reps, both formulas are calculated and the lower estimate is retained.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

Use recent Dumbbell Lunge and Smith Machine Low-Bar Squat sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.

2. Find the dumbbell lunge strength level

The dumbbell lunge rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so larger lifters are expected to lunge more load without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.

3. Find the smith machine low-bar squat strength level

The standards use the sex-specific thresholds from the individual Smith Machine Low-Bar Squat tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.

4. Compare the two results

Each max receives a level from Beginner through Elite. The lower-level lift becomes the priority. At matching levels, a priority appears only when one lift is at least 10 points farther from its next level; otherwise the result is Balanced.

Treat the result as a training comparison rather than an explanation of why one lift trails. Set quality, fatigue, skill, and training exposure all matter. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.

StageWhat happens
Estimate each maxUse the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result.
Rate the dumbbell lungeUse combined-dumbbell estimated max and adjust targets with the two-thirds rule.
Rate the smith machine low-bar squatUse the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Compare different levelsName the lower-level lift as the priority.
Compare matching levelsUse Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points.

Dumbbell Lunge and Smith Machine Low-Bar Squat Exercises Used by This Calculator

Compare like-for-like attempts by keeping the dumbbell lunge and smith machine low-bar squat setup consistent with their individual rules. Use strict, repeatable Dumbbell Lunge and Smith Machine Low-Bar Squat tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.

Enter combined load from two matched dumbbells

Use one forward or reverse lunge direction for the set, reach at least parallel front-thigh depth with the back knee near the floor, and return to stable standing. Do not enter per-hand load, stationary split squats, walking or Bulgarian lunges, support, bounce, partial reps, or substitutions.

Use the Smith Machine Low-Bar Squat setup and load convention

Use Smith rails vertical within 1 degree and a non-counterbalanced bar. Measure actual unloaded resistance with a calibrated force scale and enter it plus every plate on both sleeves. Center the bar across the posterior-deltoid shelf immediately below the spine of the scapula, below the upper-trapezius high-bar position. The upper back, not the arms, supports the bar; contact cannot change during a rep. Set heel centers at measured hip-joint width; outward toe angle is permitted. Position feet so the bar center is vertically over midfoot at the bottom; retain the same stance. Descend until both hip creases are below the top of the knees; stand to simultaneous hip/knee lockout without heel rise, bar-shelf change, excessive good-morning recovery, rehooking, or stop contact. Count 1–10 controlled reps. Belt/sleeves/chalk/shoes allowed; rebound wraps, suits, straps, assistance, and partials prohibited.
