Dumbbell Lunge vs Dumbbell Box Squat

Compare your dumbbell lunge and dumbbell box squat against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Enter 1–12 reps for estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, priority.

First lift: combined dumbbell load and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, use one forward or reverse lunge direction for the set, reach at least parallel front-thigh depth with the back knee near the floor, and return to stable standing. For the second exercise, squat matched dumbbells to controlled valid-depth box contact, keep tension on the box, and stand to full lockout without bounce, rocking, long seated rest, thigh support, high-box partials. Heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

How Your Dumbbell Lunge vs Dumbbell Box Squat Result Is Calculated

Each set is converted to an estimated max before the calculator assigns exercise-specific strength levels and compares them.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

The entered weight is used directly for one rep. With 2–12 reps, both estimates are compared and the lower value is used.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

For the most useful Dumbbell Lunge vs Dumbbell Box Squat comparison, enter clean, difficult sets performed with the same technique and range of motion you use in training. Lower-rep sets usually require less extrapolation.

2. Find the dumbbell lunge strength level

The standards use the sex-specific combined-load thresholds from the individual Dumbbell Lunge tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

Two-thirds scaling raises the target as bodyweight rises while limiting the size advantage that a direct one-to-one adjustment would create.

3. Find the dumbbell box squat strength level

The dumbbell box squat rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.

4. Compare the two results

Each max receives a level from Beginner through Elite. The lower-level lift becomes the priority. At matching levels, a priority appears only when one lift is at least 10 points farther from its next level; otherwise the result is Balanced.

Treat the result as a training comparison rather than an explanation of why one lift trails. Set quality, fatigue, skill, and training exposure all matter. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.

StageWhat happens
Estimate each maxUse the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result.
Rate the dumbbell lungeUse combined-dumbbell estimated max and adjust targets with the two-thirds rule.
Rate the dumbbell box squatUse the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Compare different levelsName the lower-level lift as the priority.
Compare matching levelsUse Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points.

The calculator above applies these steps to your exact entries and reports both lift ratings, both next targets, and the final comparison.

Dumbbell Lunge and Dumbbell Box Squat Exercises Used by This Calculator

For a useful comparison, perform a strict dumbbell lunge and a strict dumbbell box squat using the setup and load rules below. Use strict, repeatable Dumbbell Lunge and Dumbbell Box Squat tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.

Enter combined load from two matched dumbbells

Use one forward or reverse lunge direction for the set, reach at least parallel front-thigh depth with the back knee near the floor, and return to stable standing. Do not enter per-hand load, stationary split squats, walking or Bulgarian lunges, support, bounce, partial reps, or substitutions.

Use the Dumbbell Box Squat setup and load convention

The total combined dumbbell load used for strict box-squat reps, summing both dumbbells and excluding bodyweight. Valid Dumbbell Box Squat reps. Squat matched dumbbells to controlled valid-depth box contact, keep tension on the box, and stand to full lockout without bounce, rocking, long seated rest, thigh support, high-box partials, or deadlift-style hinge drift. Consistent setup, range, and finish quality across the entered set. No substituted exercise or assisted reps.
