Barbell Clean And Press vs Barbell Split Jerk

Compare your clean and press (barbell) and barbell split jerk against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Test each lift with 1–12 strict reps to see estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.

First lift: total barbell load and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: total barbell load and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, stand fully before starting the overhead press. For the second exercise, front-rack start, controlled dip, vertical drive, split catch, locked elbows, foot recovery, and stable standing finish. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

Clean And Press (Barbell) vs Barbell Split Jerk Strength Standards

These bodyweight tables place the clean and press (barbell) and barbell split jerk targets side by side from Novice through Elite. Use them to compare standards, not to force a particular ratio between the lifts.

Find the closest row in the men’s or women’s table. Every target lists Clean And Press (Barbell) / Barbell Split Jerk, pounds first and kilograms second. Enter your own sets above for exact ratings without testing a true one-rep max.

How Your Clean And Press (Barbell) vs Barbell Split Jerk Result Is Calculated

Both lifts are scored independently first: estimated max, bodyweight-adjusted strength level, and progress toward the next level. Those ratings drive the comparison.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

The entered weight is used directly for one rep. With 2–12 reps, both estimates are compared and the lower value is used.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

Use recent Clean And Press (Barbell) and Barbell Split Jerk sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.

2. Find the clean and press (barbell) strength level

The standards use the sex-specific thresholds from the individual Clean And Press (Barbell) tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.

3. Find the barbell split jerk strength level

The standards use the sex-specific thresholds from the individual Barbell Split Jerk tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so larger lifters are expected to lift more without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.

4. Compare the two results

The lift with the lower Beginner-to-Elite rating is the priority. If both ratings match, the calculator requires a 10-point difference in next-level progress before naming a priority; otherwise it reports Balanced.

The result identifies the lower standards rating, not its cause. Technique, fatigue, training history, and set quality can all affect the comparison. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.

StageWhat happens
Estimate each maxUse the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result.
Rate the clean and press (barbell)Use the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Rate the barbell split jerkUse the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Compare different levelsName the lower-level lift as the priority.
Compare matching levelsUse Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points.

The calculator above applies these steps to your exact entries and reports both lift ratings, both next targets, and the final comparison.

Clean And Press (Barbell) and Barbell Split Jerk Exercises Used by This Calculator

The calculator expects repeatable clean and press (barbell) and barbell split jerk results. Follow each exercise definition below so the two ratings are based on valid tests. Use strict, repeatable Clean And Press (Barbell) and Barbell Split Jerk tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.

Use the Clean And Press (Barbell) setup and load convention

Barbell starts on the floor from a dead stop. Clean each rep to a stable front rack. Stand fully before starting the overhead press. Press strictly; no dip, drive, jerk, or rebend. Lock out overhead with hips, knees, and elbows extended. Lower or reset under control before the next rep. No bouncing from the floor between reps. No hang cleans, thrusters, continental cleans, or axle variations. No dumbbells, kettlebells, machines, Smith machines, or straps.

Use the Barbell Split Jerk setup and load convention

Total barbell weight, bodyweight, and reps. Front-rack start, controlled dip, vertical drive, split catch, locked elbows, foot recovery, and stable standing finish. No push presses, no-split push jerks, squat jerks, clean-and-jerk totals, thrusters, press-outs, unstable catches, and strongman implement substitutions. Consistent setup, range, and finish quality across the entered set.
