Barbell Power Clean vs Barbell Block Power Clean

Compare your barbell power clean and barbell block power clean against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Test each lift with 1–12 strict reps to see estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.

First lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, begin every rep motionless on the floor, reach full extension, turn the bar over into a secure front rack above parallel, and stand tall. For the second exercise, begin motionless, fully supported, clean grip, no straps; no roll/bounce/rock/pre-lift. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

Barbell Power Clean vs Barbell Block Power Clean Strength Standards

The paired standards below show what the power clean and barbell block power clean each require at the same strength level. They are separate exercise targets rather than a prescribed difference between your lifts.

Select the appropriate sex table and nearest bodyweight, then choose a strength-level column. Values are ordered Power Clean / Barbell Block Power Clean in pounds with kilograms underneath. The calculator above handles exact bodyweight and set inputs.

How Your Barbell Power Clean vs Barbell Block Power Clean Result Is Calculated

Each set is converted to an estimated max before the calculator assigns exercise-specific strength levels and compares them.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

A one-rep set uses the entered weight. For 2–12 reps, both formulas are calculated and the lower estimate is retained.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

Use recent Power Clean and Barbell Block Power Clean sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.

2. Find the power clean strength level

The power clean rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.

3. Find the barbell block power clean strength level

For barbell block power clean, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.

4. Compare the two results

Strength level decides the comparison first. Matching levels remain Balanced unless progress toward the next target differs by at least 10 points.

The result identifies the lower standards rating, not its cause. Technique, fatigue, training history, and set quality can all affect the comparison. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.

StageWhat happens
Estimate each maxUse the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result.
Rate the power cleanAdjust power clean targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule.
Rate the barbell block power cleanUse the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Compare different levelsName the lower-level lift as the priority.
Compare matching levelsUse Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points.

Barbell Power Clean and Barbell Block Power Clean Exercises Used by This Calculator

Compare like-for-like attempts by keeping the power clean and barbell block power clean setup consistent with their individual rules. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Power Clean and Barbell Block Power Clean tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.

Start from the floor and catch above parallel

Enter total barbell weight. Begin every rep motionless on the floor, reach full extension, turn the bar over into a secure front rack above parallel, and stand tall. Do not enter a hang clean, squat clean, muscle clean, high pull without a catch, bounced rep, press-out, strapped lift, or machine variation.

Use the Barbell Block Power Clean setup and load convention

Use equal rigid 4.0-inch blocks and 450 mm plates; shaft center about 12.86 inches above floor and below inferior patella. Begin motionless, fully supported, clean grip, no straps; no roll/bounce/rock/pre-lift. Receive front rack with upper thigh above parallel at initial control, then stand fully with feet balanced. Enter total weight; whole reps 1–10; reset dead stop every rep. Riding a clearly above-parallel receipt lower is allowed; receipt at/below parallel, changed setup, assistance, missed rack/recovery, or wrong weight is invalid. Allowed: exact bar/blocks/plates/collars, platform, belt, sleeves, wrist wraps, tape, chalk, shoes.
