Barbell Front Squat vs Kettlebell Overhead Squat
Compare your barbell front squat and kettlebell overhead squat against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Add a recent 1–12-rep result for each lift to compare estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.
First lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, support the bar across the front of the shoulders, descend under control until the hip crease is below the top of the knee. For the second exercise, descend under control into a valid squat depth while keeping the kettlebell locked overhead, then stand back up without losing shoulder position or foot balance. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.
Barbell Front Squat vs Kettlebell Overhead Squat Strength Standards
The paired standards below show what the barbell front squat and kettlebell overhead squat each require at the same strength level. They are separate exercise targets rather than a prescribed difference between your lifts.
Select the appropriate sex table and nearest bodyweight, then choose a strength-level column. Values are ordered Barbell Front Squat / Kettlebell Overhead Squat in pounds with kilograms underneath. The calculator above handles exact bodyweight and set inputs.

How Your Barbell Front Squat vs Kettlebell Overhead Squat Result Is Calculated
The calculator estimates both one-rep maxes, rates each one against its exercise and bodyweight standards, and then compares the two ratings.
1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set
A one-rep set uses the entered weight. For 2–12 reps, both formulas are calculated and the lower estimate is retained.
- Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
- Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)
Use recent Barbell Front Squat and Kettlebell Overhead Squat sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.
2. Find the barbell front squat strength level
The standards use the sex-specific front squat thresholds from the individual tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.
3. Find the kettlebell overhead squat strength level
For kettlebell overhead squat, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.
4. Compare the two results
The lift with the lower Beginner-to-Elite rating is the priority. If both ratings match, the calculator requires a 10-point difference in next-level progress before naming a priority; otherwise it reports Balanced.
The result identifies the lower standards rating, not its cause. Technique, fatigue, training history, and set quality can all affect the comparison. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Estimate each max | Use the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result. |
| Rate the barbell front squat | Use total-barbell estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule. |
| Rate the kettlebell overhead squat | Use the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule. |
| Compare different levels | Name the lower-level lift as the priority. |
| Compare matching levels | Use Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points. |
Use the calculator above to view both estimated maxes, strength levels, next targets, and the resulting priority or Balanced verdict.

Barbell Front Squat and Kettlebell Overhead Squat Exercises Used by This Calculator
The calculator expects repeatable barbell front squat and kettlebell overhead squat results. Follow each exercise definition below so the two ratings are based on valid tests. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Front Squat and Kettlebell Overhead Squat tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.
Keep the bar in the front rack through full depth
Enter the bar plus all plates. Support the bar across the front of the shoulders, descend under control until the hip crease is below the top of the knee, and stand to full lockout while retaining the front rack. Do not enter per-side plates, back squats, Zercher or goblet squats, Smith or machine squats, partial reps, assisted reps, or reps that lose the front rack.
Use the Kettlebell Overhead Squat setup and load convention
Entered load is the weight of the one kettlebell locked overhead by one arm at a time. Total valid reps across both arms combined. Descend under control into a valid squat depth while keeping the kettlebell locked overhead, then stand back up without losing shoulder position or foot balance. A valid finish requires full controlled standing with the kettlebell still locked overhead, hips and knees extended, and no press-out, hand support, or dumped lockout. Consistent setup, range, and finish quality across the entered set. No substituted exercise or assisted reps.
