Barbell Front Squat vs Hip Abduction Machine

Compare your barbell front squat and hip abduction machine against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Use one clean 1–12-rep set per lift to review estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.

First lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: displayed machine or cable resistance and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, support the bar across the front of the shoulders, descend under control until the hip crease is below the top of the knee. For the second exercise, controlled inward or neutral thigh start position required. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

Barbell Front Squat vs Hip Abduction Machine Strength Standards

The paired standards below show what the barbell front squat and hip abduction machine each require at the same strength level. They are separate exercise targets rather than a prescribed difference between your lifts.

Select the appropriate sex table and nearest bodyweight, then choose a strength-level column. Values are ordered Barbell Front Squat / Hip Abduction Machine in pounds with kilograms underneath. The calculator above handles exact bodyweight and set inputs.

Men’s Barbell Front Squat vs Hip Abduction Machine Standards

How to read the table: Find the closest bodyweight, then use the labeled exercise row. Every strength-level entry shows one target with pounds first and kilograms beneath it.

How Your Barbell Front Squat vs Hip Abduction Machine Result Is Calculated

The calculator estimates both one-rep maxes, rates each one against its exercise and bodyweight standards, and then compares the two ratings.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

The entered weight is used directly for one rep. With 2–12 reps, both estimates are compared and the lower value is used.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

Use recent Barbell Front Squat and Hip Abduction Machine sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.

2. Find the barbell front squat strength level

For barbell front squat, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so larger lifters are expected to squat more without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.

3. Find the hip abduction machine strength level

For hip abduction machine, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so larger lifters are expected to lift more without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.

4. Compare the two results

Strength level decides the comparison first. Matching levels remain Balanced unless progress toward the next target differs by at least 10 points.

The result identifies the lower standards rating, not its cause. Technique, fatigue, training history, and set quality can all affect the comparison. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.

StageWhat happens
Estimate each maxUse the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result.
Rate the barbell front squatUse total-barbell estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule.
Rate the hip abduction machineUse the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Compare different levelsName the lower-level lift as the priority.
Compare matching levelsUse Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points.

The calculator above applies these steps to your exact entries and reports both lift ratings, both next targets, and the final comparison.

Barbell Front Squat and Hip Abduction Machine Exercises Used by This Calculator

Compare like-for-like attempts by keeping the barbell front squat and hip abduction machine setup consistent with their individual rules. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Front Squat and Hip Abduction Machine tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.

Keep the bar in the front rack through full depth

Enter the bar plus all plates. Support the bar across the front of the shoulders, descend under control until the hip crease is below the top of the knee, and stand to full lockout while retaining the front rack. Do not enter per-side plates, back squats, Zercher or goblet squats, Smith or machine squats, partial reps, assisted reps, or reps that lose the front rack.

Use the Hip Abduction Machine setup and load convention

Selected or loaded machine resistance is used. Enter total bilateral load, not per-leg load. Do not add bodyweight to the entered load. Strict seated bilateral machine hip abduction. Thigh pads and start-angle setting stay consistent. Back, hips, pelvis, thighs, seat, and pad position stay stable. Controlled inward or neutral thigh start position required. Controlled outward thigh finish required. Controlled return required. Same machine, seat, pad position, start angle, and range for the full set. No tiny pulses or shortened-range reps. No stack bounce, pad slamming, or machine rebound. No hip lift, seat slide, pelvis rotation, torso leaning, torso twisting, or aggressive handle-pulling. No unilateral, alternating-leg, or one-leg-assisted reps. No forced reps, partner assistance, or uncontrolled returns.
