Barbell Front Squat vs Hack Squat Calf Raise

Compare your barbell front squat and hack squat calf raise against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Add a recent 1–12-rep result for each lift to compare estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.

First lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, support the bar across the front of the shoulders, descend under control until the hip crease is below the top of the knee. For the second exercise, set heel centers at measured hip-joint width with metatarsal heads supported on the footplate lower edge and heels unobstructed; outward toe angle is permitted. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

Barbell Front Squat vs Hack Squat Calf Raise Strength Standards

Use these tables to compare the estimated one-rep max required for the barbell front squat and hack squat calf raise to reach the same strength level at each listed bodyweight. The numbers are calculator targets, not a required gap between the two lifts.

Choose the men’s or women’s table, find the closest bodyweight row, and read across to Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, or Elite. Each entry shows Barbell Front Squat / Hack Squat Calf Raise, with pounds above kilograms. Use the calculator for your exact bodyweight and recent sets.

How Your Barbell Front Squat vs Hack Squat Calf Raise Result Is Calculated

Each set is converted to an estimated max before the calculator assigns exercise-specific strength levels and compares them.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

The entered weight is used directly for one rep. With 2–12 reps, both estimates are compared and the lower value is used.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

Use recent Barbell Front Squat and Hack Squat Calf Raise sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.

2. Find the barbell front squat strength level

The barbell front squat rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.

3. Find the hack squat calf raise strength level

The standards use the sex-specific thresholds from the individual Hack Squat Calf Raise tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.

4. Compare the two results

Each max receives a level from Beginner through Elite. The lower-level lift becomes the priority. At matching levels, a priority appears only when one lift is at least 10 points farther from its next level; otherwise the result is Balanced.

Treat the result as a training comparison rather than an explanation of why one lift trails. Set quality, fatigue, skill, and training exposure all matter. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.

StageWhat happens
Estimate each maxUse the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result.
Rate the barbell front squatUse total-barbell estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule.
Rate the hack squat calf raiseUse the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Compare different levelsName the lower-level lift as the priority.
Compare matching levelsUse Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points.

Barbell Front Squat and Hack Squat Calf Raise Exercises Used by This Calculator

Valid results depend on using the specified barbell front squat and hack squat calf raise technique and load convention. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Front Squat and Hack Squat Calf Raise tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.

Keep the bar in the front rack through full depth

Enter the bar plus all plates. Support the bar across the front of the shoulders, descend under control until the hip crease is below the top of the knee, and stand to full lockout while retaining the front rack. Do not enter per-side plates, back squats, Zercher or goblet squats, Smith or machine squats, partial reps, assisted reps, or reps that lose the front rack.

Use the Hack Squat Calf Raise setup and load convention

Use a plate-weighted linear hack-squat carriage whose rails rise 45 degrees plus or minus 2 degrees. Face away from the carriage with back/glutes on its pad and both shoulders under shoulder pads; hold fixed handles. Record verified unloaded carriage mass. Enter total moving weight: carriage mass plus all plates on both horns, never per-side plates alone. Set heel centers at measured hip-joint width with metatarsal heads supported on the footplate lower edge and heels unobstructed; outward toe angle is permitted. Keep knees within 5 degrees of full extension. Lower both heel centers 5 cm plus or minus 1 cm below the forefoot-support plane and pause visibly; raise them 5 cm plus or minus 1 cm above that plane and pause visibly. Count 2–15 controlled reps with continuous pad/foot contact and without knee bounce, hip drive, endpoint loss, carriage-stop impact, rebound, or assistance. Maximal singles prohibited.
