Barbell Front Squat vs Double Dumbbell Squat Clean

Compare your barbell front squat and double dumbbell squat clean against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Add a recent 1–12-rep result for each lift to compare estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.

First lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, support the bar across the front of the shoulders, descend under control until the hip crease is below the top of the knee. For the second exercise, pull/turn over simultaneously and receive both at shoulders in one continuous descent until hip crease is below top of knee while both remain racked. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

Barbell Front Squat vs Double Dumbbell Squat Clean Strength Standards

Use these tables to compare the estimated one-rep max required for the barbell front squat and double dumbbell squat clean to reach the same strength level at each listed bodyweight. The numbers are calculator targets, not a required gap between the two lifts.

Choose the men’s or women’s table, find the closest bodyweight row, and read across to Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, or Elite. Each entry shows Barbell Front Squat / Double Dumbbell Squat Clean, with pounds above kilograms. Use the calculator for your exact bodyweight and recent sets.

How Your Barbell Front Squat vs Double Dumbbell Squat Clean Result Is Calculated

Each set is converted to an estimated max before the calculator assigns exercise-specific strength levels and compares them.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

A one-rep set uses the entered weight. For 2–12 reps, both formulas are calculated and the lower estimate is retained.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

Use recent Barbell Front Squat and Double Dumbbell Squat Clean sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.

2. Find the barbell front squat strength level

For barbell front squat, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so larger lifters are expected to squat more without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.

3. Find the double dumbbell squat clean strength level

For double dumbbell squat clean, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.

4. Compare the two results

Strength level decides the comparison first. Matching levels remain Balanced unless progress toward the next target differs by at least 10 points.

A priority result is a standards comparison, not a diagnosis. Differences in technique, fatigue, practice, or set effort may influence it. Age range is recorded anonymously and does not alter these standards.

StageWhat happens
Estimate each maxUse the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result.
Rate the barbell front squatUse total-barbell estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule.
Rate the double dumbbell squat cleanUse the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Compare different levelsName the lower-level lift as the priority.
Compare matching levelsUse Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points.

The calculator above applies these steps to your exact entries and reports both lift ratings, both next targets, and the final comparison.

Barbell Front Squat and Double Dumbbell Squat Clean Exercises Used by This Calculator

The calculator expects repeatable barbell front squat and double dumbbell squat clean results. Follow each exercise definition below so the two ratings are based on valid tests. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Front Squat and Double Dumbbell Squat Clean tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.

Keep the bar in the front rack through full depth

Enter the bar plus all plates. Support the bar across the front of the shoulders, descend under control until the hip crease is below the top of the knee, and stand to full lockout while retaining the front rack. Do not enter per-side plates, back squats, Zercher or goblet squats, Smith or machine squats, partial reps, assisted reps, or reps that lose the front rack.

Use the Double Dumbbell Squat Clean setup and load convention

Use two equal matched dumbbells. Enter one verified mass; display per and combined; score doubled per-dumbbell e1RM/bodyweight. Begin both motionless on floor outside feet. Pull/turn over simultaneously and receive both at shoulders in one continuous descent until hip crease is below top of knee while both remain racked. Recover without re-cleaning to motionless standing with hips/knees extended. Lower/reset both motionless on floor for each of 1–5 reps. Belt/wraps/chalk/sleeves/shoes allowed; straps/hooks/assistance prohibited.
