Barbell Bent-Over Row vs Sled Row Strength Standards

Bent Over Row vs Sled Row Strength Standards

The men’s and women’s tables show the exact Novice-through-Elite targets for both exercises. Weight-based targets use bodyweight and display actual pounds and kilograms. Repetition and time standards keep their exercise-specific units and use age only when the individual exercise standards require it.

Age and bodyweight are never combined as row dimensions. Internal bodyweight-ratio scores are never displayed. When the exercises use unlike measurements, the table presents an explicit reference crosswalk instead of inventing a conversion.

How Your Bent Over Row vs Sled Row Result Is Calculated

The two exercises can use different measurements. The calculator rates each result against the standards for that exercise first, then compares the resulting strength levels and progress toward the next level. It never invents a reps-to-weight conversion.

1. Estimate the weight-based result

For Bent-Over Row, one rep uses the weight entered. For 2–12 reps, the calculator runs both estimates and keeps the lower result.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

For a useful Bent Over Row vs Sled Row comparison, use clean, recent sets performed with consistent technique and range of motion. Lower-rep sets usually require less extrapolation.

2. Rate the Bent-Over Row result

The standards use the sex-specific total-barbell thresholds from the individual tool. The target adjusts to bodyweight using reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

3. Rate the Sled Row result

The exercise-specific sex-specific load-to-bodyweight thresholds map the fixed-distance attempt to a strength tier. The calculator keeps the specified fixed distance and rates the external load without estimating a one-rep max.

4. Compare strength level and progress

The lower strength level is the priority. When both exercises reach the same level, a priority appears only when one is at least 10 points farther from its next target. Otherwise, the result is Balanced. Age range is recorded anonymously and does not change either standard.

Bent Over Row and Sled Row Exercises Used by This Calculator

For a useful comparison, perform a strict barbell bent-over row and a strict sled row using the setup and load rules below. Use strict, repeatable Bent Over Row and Sled Row tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.

Use the Barbell Bent-Over Row setup and load convention

Barbell starts from a dead hang below the shoulders. Torso is hinged forward and remains roughly near-parallel to the floor. Knees are slightly bent, hips are hinged, and the spine stays neutral. Bar is pulled to the lower ribs or upper abdomen each rep. Arms extend fully at the bottom of each rep. No torso heaving, hip snap, or body English. Consistent torso angle and bar path are required across tests. No Pendlay rows, Yates rows, cheat rows, T-bar rows, Smith machine rows, machine rows, partial range variants, or equipped lifting standards. Estimated 1RM is calculated from the entered load and reps.

Use the Sled Row setup and load convention

Test uses a fixed 20 meters Sled Row course. Entered load is added sled load. Bodyweight is used only to calculate the load/bodyweight ratio. The sled must cross the full distance under the lifter’s unassisted effort without a scored restart.
