Barbell Overhead Press With Chains vs Standing Strict Barbell OHP Strength Standards
Compare your barbell overhead press with chains and standing overhead press against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Test each lift with 1–12 strict reps to see estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.
First lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: total barbell weight including bar and plates and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, record base mass excluding chains; weigh total chain mass, floor-supported chain mass at clavicle start, suspended chain mass at full lockout, and leader/attachment configuration. For the second exercise, keep the feet planted and torso upright, start at the shoulders, and finish at full elbow lockout. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

How Your Barbell Overhead Press with Chains vs Standing Overhead Press Result Is Calculated
The comparison starts by estimating each max separately. It then rates both lifts against their own standards before identifying the lower result.
1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set
A one-rep set uses the entered weight. For 2–12 reps, both formulas are calculated and the lower estimate is retained.
- Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
- Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)
Use recent Barbell Overhead Press with Chains and Standing Overhead Press sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.
2. Find the barbell overhead press with chains strength level
The standards use the sex-specific thresholds from the individual Barbell Overhead Press with Chains tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.
3. Find the standing overhead press strength level
The standing overhead press rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
Two-thirds scaling raises the target as bodyweight rises while limiting the size advantage that a direct one-to-one adjustment would create.
4. Compare the two results
The lift with the lower Beginner-to-Elite rating is the priority. If both ratings match, the calculator requires a 10-point difference in next-level progress before naming a priority; otherwise it reports Balanced.
A priority result is a standards comparison, not a diagnosis. Differences in technique, fatigue, practice, or set effort may influence it. Age range is recorded anonymously and does not alter these standards.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Estimate each max | Use the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result. |
| Rate the barbell overhead press with chains | Use the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule. |
| Rate the standing overhead press | Adjust strict standing barbell overhead press targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule. |
| Compare different levels | Name the lower-level lift as the priority. |
| Compare matching levels | Use Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points. |
Use the calculator above to view both estimated maxes, strength levels, next targets, and the resulting priority or Balanced verdict.
How Men’s Barbell Overhead Press with Chains and Standing Overhead Press Standards Differ
What the men’s data shows:
The standards come closest at 120 lb.
Across all listed bodyweights, Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Elite keep the same higher-target direction.
Across 120–300 lb bodyweight, the Elite gap changes from 15.9 to 29 kg.
How to read this chart: Choose a strength level and follow its line across bodyweight. Values show the Standing Overhead Press standard minus the Barbell Overhead Press with Chains standard: zero means equal, above zero means the Standing Overhead Press standard is higher, and below zero means the Barbell Overhead Press with Chains standard is higher. Barbell Overhead Press with Chains and Standing Overhead Press Exercises Used by This Calculator
The calculator expects repeatable barbell overhead press with chains and standing overhead press results. Follow each exercise definition below so the two ratings are based on valid tests. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Overhead Press with Chains and Standing Overhead Press tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.
Use the Barbell Overhead Press with Chains setup and load convention
Record base mass excluding chains; weigh total chain mass, floor-supported chain mass at clavicle start, suspended chain mass at full lockout, and leader/attachment configuration. Effective start = base + total − supported-at-start. Effective top = base + suspended-at-lockout. Each chain value is nonnegative and not above total; require effective top > start. Score top; display base/start/top/`increasing resistance`. Unrack stable; feet planted. Each rep begins with bar touching upper chest/clavicles, forearms approximately vertical, knees and hips extended; press to simultaneous full elbow lockout with bar motionless over midfoot. Knees/hips remain extended; no dip, drive, rebend, excessive layback, or assistance. Controlled return; same setup for 1–10 reps. Belt/wrist wraps/chalk allowed; no suit/supportive garment.
Enter total barbell load and press without leg drive
Enter total barbell weight including the bar and plates. Keep the feet planted and torso upright, start at the shoulders, and finish at full elbow lockout. Do not count knee dip, leg drive, excessive layback, push press, split press, seated press, partial reps, or dumbbell and machine variations.
