Barbell Power Jerk vs Kettlebell Jerk Strength Standards

Compare your barbell power jerk and kettlebell jerk against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Test each lift with 1–12 strict reps to see estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.

First lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, dip, drive, rebend under the bar in a two-side receiving stance, and recover to standing. For the second exercise, use a controlled dip and drive to send the kettlebell overhead, receive it with a valid jerk catch, then recover to a stable standing position. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

These bodyweight tables place the barbell power jerk and kettlebell jerk targets side by side from Novice through Elite. Use them to compare standards, not to force a particular ratio between the lifts.

Find the closest row in the men’s or women’s table. Every target lists Barbell Power Jerk / Kettlebell Jerk, pounds first and kilograms second. Enter your own sets above for exact ratings without testing a true one-rep max.

How Your Barbell Power Jerk vs Kettlebell Jerk Result Is Calculated

Each set is converted to an estimated max before the calculator assigns exercise-specific strength levels and compares them.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

When the set contains one rep, the entered load is the estimate. For 2–12 reps, the calculator keeps the less aggressive of the two formula results.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

Use recent Barbell Power Jerk and Kettlebell Jerk sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.

2. Find the barbell power jerk strength level

The standards use the sex-specific thresholds from the individual Barbell Power Jerk tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.

3. Find the kettlebell jerk strength level

For kettlebell jerk, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

Two-thirds scaling raises the target as bodyweight rises while limiting the size advantage that a direct one-to-one adjustment would create.

4. Compare the two results

The lift with the lower Beginner-to-Elite rating is the priority. If both ratings match, the calculator requires a 10-point difference in next-level progress before naming a priority; otherwise it reports Balanced.

The result identifies the lower standards rating, not its cause. Technique, fatigue, training history, and set quality can all affect the comparison. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.

StageWhat happens
Estimate each maxUse the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result.
Rate the barbell power jerkUse the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Rate the kettlebell jerkUse the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Compare different levelsName the lower-level lift as the priority.
Compare matching levelsUse Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points.

Barbell Power Jerk and Kettlebell Jerk Exercises Used by This Calculator

The calculator expects repeatable barbell power jerk and kettlebell jerk results. Follow each exercise definition below so the two ratings are based on valid tests. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Power Jerk and Kettlebell Jerk tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.

Use the Barbell Power Jerk setup and load convention

The entered weight for strict Barbell Power Jerk. Valid Barbell Power Jerk reps. Dip, drive, rebend under the bar in a two-side receiving stance, and recover to standing. A valid finish requires locked elbows, controlled overhead position, hips and knees extended, and balanced feet. Consistent setup, range, and finish quality across the entered set. No substituted exercise or assisted reps.

Use the Kettlebell Jerk setup and load convention

Entered load is the weight of the one kettlebell jerked from the rack by one arm at a time. Total valid reps across both arms combined. Use a controlled dip and drive to send the kettlebell overhead, receive it with a valid jerk catch, then recover to a stable standing position. A valid finish requires controlled overhead lockout with hips and knees extended after the recovery and no press-out, off-hand assist, or unstable catch. Consistent setup, range, and finish quality across the entered set. No substituted exercise or assisted reps.
