Barbell Power Clean vs Sandbag Clean Strength Standards

Compare your barbell power clean and sandbag clean against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Use one clean 1–12-rep set per lift to review estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.

First lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, begin every rep motionless on the floor, reach full extension, turn the bar over into a secure front rack above parallel, and stand tall. For the second exercise, clean the sandbag from the floor to a controlled front-rack or upper-chest position without shouldering substitution, platform scoring, pressing, carry steps, straps used as the primary lifting aid. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

Barbell Power Clean vs Sandbag Clean Strength Standards

Use these tables to compare the estimated one-rep max required for the power clean and sandbag clean to reach the same strength level at each listed bodyweight. The numbers are calculator targets, not a required gap between the two lifts.

Choose the men’s or women’s table, find the closest bodyweight row, and read across to Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, or Elite. Each entry shows Power Clean / Sandbag Clean, with pounds above kilograms. Use the calculator for your exact bodyweight and recent sets.

How Your Barbell Power Clean vs Sandbag Clean Result Is Calculated

Both lifts are scored independently first: estimated max, bodyweight-adjusted strength level, and progress toward the next level. Those ratings drive the comparison.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

A one-rep set uses the entered weight. For 2–12 reps, both formulas are calculated and the lower estimate is retained.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

For the most useful Barbell Power Clean vs Sandbag Clean comparison, enter clean, difficult sets performed with the same technique and range of motion you use in training. Lower-rep sets usually require less extrapolation.

2. Find the power clean strength level

The power clean rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so heavier lifters are expected to clean more without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.

3. Find the sandbag clean strength level

For sandbag clean, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so larger lifters are expected to lift more without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.

4. Compare the two results

The lift with the lower Beginner-to-Elite rating is the priority. If both ratings match, the calculator requires a 10-point difference in next-level progress before naming a priority; otherwise it reports Balanced.

Treat the result as a training comparison rather than an explanation of why one lift trails. Set quality, fatigue, skill, and training exposure all matter. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.

StageWhat happens
Estimate each maxUse the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result.
Rate the power cleanAdjust power clean targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule.
Rate the sandbag cleanUse the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Compare different levelsName the lower-level lift as the priority.
Compare matching levelsUse Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points.

The calculator above applies these steps to your exact entries and reports both lift ratings, both next targets, and the final comparison.

How Men’s Barbell Power Clean and Sandbag Clean Standards Differ

What the men’s data shows:

Novice closest match120 lb

The standards come closest at 120 lb.

Power Clean target is higher4 strength levels

Across all listed bodyweights, Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Elite keep the same higher-target direction.

Elite difference27 → 50 lb

Across 120–300 lb bodyweight, the Elite gap changes from 12.2 to 22.7 kg.

Barbell Power Clean and Sandbag Clean Exercises Used by This Calculator

Compare like-for-like attempts by keeping the power clean and sandbag clean setup consistent with their individual rules. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Power Clean and Sandbag Clean tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.

Start from the floor and catch above parallel

Enter total barbell weight. Begin every rep motionless on the floor, reach full extension, turn the bar over into a secure front rack above parallel, and stand tall. Do not enter a hang clean, squat clean, muscle clean, high pull without a catch, bounced rep, press-out, strapped lift, or machine variation.

Use the Sandbag Clean setup and load convention

The total sandbag weight cleaned from the floor to a stable front-rack or upper-chest position. Valid sandbag clean reps. Clean the sandbag from the floor to a controlled front-rack or upper-chest position without shouldering substitution, platform scoring, pressing, carry steps, straps used as the primary lifting aid, or assistance. Consistent setup, range, and finish quality across the entered set. No substituted exercise or assisted reps.
