Barbell Power Clean vs Double Dumbbell Muscle Clean Strength Standards
Compare your barbell power clean and double dumbbell muscle clean against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Add a recent 1–12-rep result for each lift to compare estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.
First lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, begin every rep motionless on the floor, reach full extension, turn the bar over into a secure front rack above parallel, and stand tall. For the second exercise, return both under control to the floor and settle before each of 1–5 reps. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

How Your Barbell Power Clean vs Double Dumbbell Muscle Clean Result Is Calculated
Both lifts are scored independently first: estimated max, bodyweight-adjusted strength level, and progress toward the next level. Those ratings drive the comparison.
1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set
When the set contains one rep, the entered load is the estimate. For 2–12 reps, the calculator keeps the less aggressive of the two formula results.
- Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
- Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)
Use recent Power Clean and Double Dumbbell Muscle Clean sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.
2. Find the power clean strength level
For power clean, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so heavier lifters are expected to clean more without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.
3. Find the double dumbbell muscle clean strength level
For double dumbbell muscle clean, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
Two-thirds scaling raises the target as bodyweight rises while limiting the size advantage that a direct one-to-one adjustment would create.
4. Compare the two results
The lift with the lower Beginner-to-Elite rating is the priority. If both ratings match, the calculator requires a 10-point difference in next-level progress before naming a priority; otherwise it reports Balanced.
The result identifies the lower standards rating, not its cause. Technique, fatigue, training history, and set quality can all affect the comparison. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Estimate each max | Use the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result. |
| Rate the power clean | Adjust power clean targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule. |
| Rate the double dumbbell muscle clean | Use the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule. |
| Compare different levels | Name the lower-level lift as the priority. |
| Compare matching levels | Use Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points. |
Use the calculator above to view both estimated maxes, strength levels, next targets, and the resulting priority or Balanced verdict.

Barbell Power Clean and Double Dumbbell Muscle Clean Exercises Used by This Calculator
Valid results depend on using the specified power clean and double dumbbell muscle clean technique and load convention. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Power Clean and Double Dumbbell Muscle Clean tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.
Start from the floor and catch above parallel
Enter total barbell weight. Begin every rep motionless on the floor, reach full extension, turn the bar over into a secure front rack above parallel, and stand tall. Do not enter a hang clean, squat clean, muscle clean, high pull without a catch, bounced rep, press-out, strapped lift, or machine variation.
Use the Double Dumbbell Muscle Clean setup and load convention
Use equal matched dumbbells. Enter one verified mass; display per and combined; score doubled per-dumbbell e1RM/bodyweight. Begin with both dumbbells motionless on the floor, arms straight, feet fixed, and trunk braced. Extend hips and knees and turn both directly to the shoulders in one continuous simultaneous action. After terminal extension begins, the feet may not move and the knees/hips may not rebend to pull under or receive the dumbbells. Finish motionless at full standing with both controlled at the shoulders. Return both under control to the floor and settle before each of 1–5 reps. Belt/wraps/chalk/sleeves/shoes allowed; straps/hooks/assistance prohibited.
