Barbell Power Clean vs Double Dumbbell Hang Clean Strength Standards
Compare your barbell power clean and double dumbbell hang clean against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Test each lift with 1–12 strict reps to see estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.
First lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, begin every rep motionless on the floor, reach full extension, turn the bar over into a secure front rack above parallel, and stand tall. For the second exercise, extend and turn over simultaneously; receive both at the shoulders with each hip crease below the top of its knee. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.
Barbell Power Clean vs Double Dumbbell Hang Clean Strength Standards
Use these tables to compare the estimated one-rep max required for the power clean and double dumbbell hang clean to reach the same strength level at each listed bodyweight. The numbers are calculator targets, not a required gap between the two lifts.
Choose the men’s or women’s table, find the closest bodyweight row, and read across to Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, or Elite. Each entry shows Power Clean / Double Dumbbell Hang Clean, with pounds above kilograms. Use the calculator for your exact bodyweight and recent sets.

How Your Barbell Power Clean vs Double Dumbbell Hang Clean Result Is Calculated
The comparison starts by estimating each max separately. It then rates both lifts against their own standards before identifying the lower result.
1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set
When the set contains one rep, the entered load is the estimate. For 2–12 reps, the calculator keeps the less aggressive of the two formula results.
- Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
- Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)
Use recent Power Clean and Double Dumbbell Hang Clean sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.
2. Find the power clean strength level
The power clean rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so heavier lifters are expected to clean more without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.
3. Find the double dumbbell hang clean strength level
The standards use the sex-specific thresholds from the individual Double Dumbbell Hang Clean tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so larger lifters are expected to lift more without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.
4. Compare the two results
Each max receives a level from Beginner through Elite. The lower-level lift becomes the priority. At matching levels, a priority appears only when one lift is at least 10 points farther from its next level; otherwise the result is Balanced.
Treat the result as a training comparison rather than an explanation of why one lift trails. Set quality, fatigue, skill, and training exposure all matter. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Estimate each max | Use the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result. |
| Rate the power clean | Adjust power clean targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule. |
| Rate the double dumbbell hang clean | Use the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule. |
| Compare different levels | Name the lower-level lift as the priority. |
| Compare matching levels | Use Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points. |
Use the calculator above to view both estimated maxes, strength levels, next targets, and the resulting priority or Balanced verdict.
How Men’s Barbell Power Clean and Double Dumbbell Hang Clean Standards Differ
What the men’s data shows:
The standards come closest at 120 lb.
Across all listed bodyweights, Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Elite keep the same higher-target direction.
At Elite, the difference is 25.8 kg at 120 lb and 47.7 kg at 300 lb.
How to read this chart: Choose a strength level and follow its line across bodyweight. Values show the Double Dumbbell Hang Clean standard minus the Power Clean standard: zero means equal, above zero means the Double Dumbbell Hang Clean standard is higher, and below zero means the Power Clean standard is higher. Barbell Power Clean and Double Dumbbell Hang Clean Exercises Used by This Calculator
The calculator expects repeatable power clean and double dumbbell hang clean results. Follow each exercise definition below so the two ratings are based on valid tests. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Power Clean and Double Dumbbell Hang Clean tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.
Start from the floor and catch above parallel
Enter total barbell weight. Begin every rep motionless on the floor, reach full extension, turn the bar over into a secure front rack above parallel, and stand tall. Do not enter a hang clean, squat clean, muscle clean, high pull without a catch, bounced rep, press-out, strapped lift, or machine variation.
Use the Double Dumbbell Hang Clean setup and load convention
Use equal matched dumbbells. Enter one verified mass; display per and combined; score doubled per-dumbbell e1RM/bodyweight. Begin motionless with handle centers at anatomical mid-thigh, arms straight, knees 15° ±5°, and hips hinged. Extend and turn over simultaneously; receive both at the shoulders with each hip crease below the top of its knee. Recover to motionless full standing with both dumbbells controlled at the shoulders. Return both under control to the same motionless hang for each of 1–5 reps. Belt/wraps/chalk/sleeves/shoes allowed; straps/hooks/assistance prohibited.
