Barbell Overhead Press With Bands vs Bench Strength Standards
Compare your barbell overhead press with bands and bench press against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Add a recent 1–12-rep result for each lift to compare estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.
First lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, record base barbell/plate/collar mass excluding bands, total measured band tension at the clavicle start and at full overhead lockout, band count, anchor points, attachment points, and doubled/single configuration. For the second exercise, lower the bar under control to the chest, pause without bouncing, and press to full elbow lockout with no spotter assistance. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.
Barbell Overhead Press with Bands vs Barbell Bench Press Strength Standards
These bodyweight tables place the barbell overhead press with bands and bench press targets side by side from Novice through Elite. Use them to compare standards, not to force a particular ratio between the lifts.
Find the closest row in the men’s or women’s table. Every target lists Barbell Overhead Press with Bands / Bench Press, pounds first and kilograms second. Enter your own sets above for exact ratings without testing a true one-rep max.

How Your Barbell Overhead Press with Bands vs Barbell Bench Press Result Is Calculated
Both lifts are scored independently first: estimated max, bodyweight-adjusted strength level, and progress toward the next level. Those ratings drive the comparison.
1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set
The entered weight is used directly for one rep. With 2–12 reps, both estimates are compared and the lower value is used.
- Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
- Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)
Use recent Barbell Overhead Press with Bands and Bench Press sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.
2. Find the barbell overhead press with bands strength level
The standards use the sex-specific thresholds from the individual Barbell Overhead Press with Bands tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so larger lifters are expected to lift more without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.
3. Find the bench press strength level
For bench press, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.
4. Compare the two results
The lift with the lower Beginner-to-Elite rating is the priority. If both ratings match, the calculator requires a 10-point difference in next-level progress before naming a priority; otherwise it reports Balanced.
The result identifies the lower standards rating, not its cause. Technique, fatigue, training history, and set quality can all affect the comparison. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Estimate each max | Use the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result. |
| Rate the barbell overhead press with bands | Use the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule. |
| Rate the bench press | Adjust bench press targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule. |
| Compare different levels | Name the lower-level lift as the priority. |
| Compare matching levels | Use Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points. |
The calculator above applies these steps to your exact entries and reports both lift ratings, both next targets, and the final comparison.
How Men’s Barbell Overhead Press with Bands and Barbell Bench Press Standards Differ
What the men’s data shows:
The standards come closest at 120 lb.

Barbell Overhead Press with Bands and Barbell Bench Press Exercises Used by This Calculator
Compare like-for-like attempts by keeping the barbell overhead press with bands and bench press setup consistent with their individual rules. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Overhead Press with Bands and Barbell Bench Press tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.
Use the Barbell Overhead Press with Bands setup and load convention
Record base barbell/plate/collar mass excluding bands, total measured band tension at the clavicle start and at full overhead lockout, band count, anchor points, attachment points, and doubled/single configuration. Do not infer tension from color. Effective start = base + start tension. Effective top = base + lockout tension. Require lockout tension > start tension >= 0. Score effective top; display base, start, top, and `increasing resistance`. Unrack to a stable standing position; feet remain planted. Begin each counted rep with bar touching upper chest/clavicles, forearms approximately vertical, knees and hips extended. Press around the face to simultaneous full elbow lockout with bar motionless over the midfoot; knees/hips stay extended. Controlled return to the same start. Same setup for 1–10 reps. Belt, wrist wraps, and chalk allowed. No suit, bench, spotter assistance, or supportive press garment.
Use a paused competition-style barbell bench press
Lower the bar under control to the chest, pause without bouncing, and press to full elbow lockout with no spotter assistance. Enter the total barbell weight. Do not enter a touch-and-go, assisted, partial, Smith-machine, dumbbell, incline, decline, equipped, or bench-shirt result.
