Axle Push Press vs Bench Strength Standards

Compare your axle push press and bench press against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Enter one recent set of 1–12 reps for each lift to see estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.

First lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, use one controlled knee and hip dip, drive the axle upward with the legs, and press continuously to overhead lockout. For the second exercise, lower the bar under control to the chest, pause without bouncing, and press to full elbow lockout with no spotter assistance. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

Axle Push Press vs Barbell Bench Press Strength Standards

Use these tables to compare the estimated one-rep max required for the axle push press and bench press to reach the same strength level at each listed bodyweight. The numbers are calculator targets, not a required gap between the two lifts.

Choose the men’s or women’s table, find the closest bodyweight row, and read across to Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, or Elite. Each entry shows Axle Push Press / Bench Press, with pounds above kilograms. Use the calculator for your exact bodyweight and recent sets.

How Your Axle Push Press vs Barbell Bench Press Result Is Calculated

The comparison starts by estimating each max separately. It then rates both lifts against their own standards before identifying the lower result.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

When the set contains one rep, the entered load is the estimate. For 2–12 reps, the calculator keeps the less aggressive of the two formula results.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

Set quality matters for this Axle Push Press vs Barbell Bench Press comparison. Enter technically consistent, challenging sets, and prefer lower-rep results when practical because the estimate extends less far beyond the performed set.

2. Find the axle push press strength level

The standards use the sex-specific thresholds from the individual Axle Push Press tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

Two-thirds scaling raises the target as bodyweight rises while limiting the size advantage that a direct one-to-one adjustment would create.

3. Find the bench press strength level

For bench press, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so heavier lifters are expected to press more total barbell weight without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.

4. Compare the two results

Each max receives a level from Beginner through Elite. The lower-level lift becomes the priority. At matching levels, a priority appears only when one lift is at least 10 points farther from its next level; otherwise the result is Balanced.

Treat the result as a training comparison rather than an explanation of why one lift trails. Set quality, fatigue, skill, and training exposure all matter. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.

StageWhat happens
Estimate each maxUse the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result.
Rate the axle push pressUse the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule.
Rate the bench pressAdjust bench press targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule.
Compare different levelsName the lower-level lift as the priority.
Compare matching levelsUse Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points.

Use the calculator above to view both estimated maxes, strength levels, next targets, and the resulting priority or Balanced verdict.

Axle Push Press and Barbell Bench Press Exercises Used by This Calculator

Valid results depend on using the specified axle push press and bench press technique and load convention. Use strict, repeatable Axle Push Press and Barbell Bench Press tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and load rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different load conventions.

Use the Axle Push Press setup and load convention

The entered weight for strict Axle Push Press. Valid Axle Push Press reps. Use one controlled knee and hip dip, drive the axle upward with the legs, and press continuously to overhead lockout. A valid finish requires elbows, hips, and knees locked with the axle controlled overhead and no jerk-style receiving dip. Consistent setup, range, and finish quality across the entered set. No substituted exercise or assisted reps.

Use a paused competition-style barbell bench press

Lower the bar under control to the chest, pause without bouncing, and press to full elbow lockout with no spotter assistance. Enter the total barbell weight. Do not enter a touch-and-go, assisted, partial, Smith-machine, dumbbell, incline, decline, equipped, or bench-shirt result.
