Barbell Sumo Deadlift vs Deficit Deadlift Strength Standards

Compare your barbell sumo deadlift and deficit deadlift against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Enter one recent set of 1–12 reps for each lift to see estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.

First lift: external load and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: total barbell weight and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, follow the individual Barbell Sumo Deadlift calculator’s exercise-specific setup, load convention, range of motion, and finish rules. For the second exercise, stand on the same stable 1 to 3 inch platform for the full test. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

The paired standards below show what the barbell sumo deadlift and deficit deadlift each require at the same strength level. They are separate exercise targets rather than a prescribed difference between your lifts.

Select the appropriate sex table and nearest bodyweight, then choose a strength-level column. Values are ordered Barbell Sumo Deadlift / Deficit Deadlift in pounds with kilograms underneath. The calculator above handles exact bodyweight and set inputs.

How Your Barbell Sumo Deadlift vs Deficit Deadlift Result Is Calculated

Both lifts are scored independently first: estimated max, bodyweight-adjusted strength level, and progress toward the next level. Those ratings drive the comparison.

1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set

The entered weight is used directly for one rep. With 2–12 reps, both estimates are compared and the lower value is used.

  • Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
  • Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)

For the most useful Barbell Sumo Deadlift vs Deficit Deadlift comparison, enter clean, difficult sets performed with the same technique and range of motion you use in training. Lower-rep sets usually require less extrapolation.

2. Find the barbell sumo deadlift strength level

For barbell sumo deadlift, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

Two-thirds scaling raises the target as bodyweight rises while limiting the size advantage that a direct one-to-one adjustment would create.

3. Find the deficit deadlift strength level

The deficit deadlift rating uses its sex-specific exercise standards. Reference targets at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women are scaled to the entered bodyweight by reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.

The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so heavier lifters are expected to lift more total weight without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.

4. Compare the two results

Strength level decides the comparison first. Matching levels remain Balanced unless progress toward the next target differs by at least 10 points.

The result identifies the lower standards rating, not its cause. Technique, fatigue, training history, and set quality can all affect the comparison. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.

StageWhat happens
Estimate each maxUse the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result.
Rate the barbell sumo deadliftAdjust barbell sumo deadlift targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule.
Rate the deficit deadliftAdjust deficit deadlift targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule.
Compare different levelsName the lower-level lift as the priority.
Compare matching levelsUse Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points.

The calculator above applies these steps to your exact entries and reports both lift ratings, both next targets, and the final comparison.

Barbell Sumo Deadlift and Deficit Deadlift Exercises Used by This Calculator

Compare like-for-like attempts by keeping the barbell sumo deadlift and deficit deadlift setup consistent with their individual rules. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Sumo Deadlift and Deficit Deadlift tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and weight-entry rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different weight conventions.

Use a strict, repeatable Barbell Sumo Deadlift

Follow the individual Barbell Sumo Deadlift calculator’s exercise-specific setup, load convention, range of motion, and finish rules. Keep the same setup when retesting.

Use a stable 1 to 3 inch deficit and a dead-stop floor start

Stand on the same stable 1 to 3 inch platform for the full test. Use a straight bar, conventional stance, and total barbell weight. Begin each repetition with the bar motionless on the floor and finish at full standing lockout. Do not enter a conventional floor deadlift, sumo deadlift, rack pull, block pull, trap-bar deadlift, Romanian deadlift, strapped pull, bounced repetition, or touch-and-go set.

Enter one recent Barbell Sumo Deadlift result and one recent Deficit Deadlift result

Use the correct input for each exercise: External load and a whole number from 1 to 12 reps for Barbell Sumo Deadlift and Total barbell weight and a whole number from 1 to 12 reps for Deficit Deadlift.
