Paused Barbell Back Squat vs Smith Machine Back Squat Strength Standards
Compare your paused barbell back squat and Smith machine back squat against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Test each lift with 1–12 strict reps to see estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.
First lift: total barbell load and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: smith machine load and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, controlled descent until hip crease is below the top of the knee. For the second exercise, keep both hands fixed on the bar, follow the machine’s fixed track, descend until the hip crease clearly reaches at least knee level. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.

How Your Paused Barbell Back Squat vs Smith Machine Back Squat Result Is Calculated
Each set is converted to an estimated max before the calculator assigns exercise-specific strength levels and compares them.
1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set
When the set contains one rep, the entered load is the estimate. For 2–12 reps, the calculator keeps the less aggressive of the two formula results.
- Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
- Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)
Use recent Paused Barbell Back Squat and Smith Machine Back Squat sets with consistent technique and full intended range of motion. Difficult lower-rep sets generally make the estimated max less dependent on extrapolation.
2. Find the paused barbell back squat strength level
The standards use the sex-specific thresholds from the individual Paused Barbell Back Squat tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so larger lifters are expected to lift more without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.
3. Find the Smith machine back squat strength level
For Smith machine back squat, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
Two-thirds scaling raises the target as bodyweight rises while limiting the size advantage that a direct one-to-one adjustment would create.
4. Compare the two results
The lift with the lower Beginner-to-Elite rating is the priority. If both ratings match, the calculator requires a 10-point difference in next-level progress before naming a priority; otherwise it reports Balanced.
Treat the result as a training comparison rather than an explanation of why one lift trails. Set quality, fatigue, skill, and training exposure all matter. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Estimate each max | Use the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result. |
| Rate the paused barbell back squat | Use the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule. |
| Rate the Smith machine back squat | Adjust Smith machine back squat targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds rule. |
| Compare different levels | Name the lower-level lift as the priority. |
| Compare matching levels | Use Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points. |

Paused Barbell Back Squat and Smith Machine Back Squat Exercises Used by This Calculator
For a useful comparison, perform a strict paused barbell back squat and a strict Smith machine back squat using the setup and load rules below. Use strict, repeatable Paused Barbell Back Squat and Smith Machine Back Squat tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and weight-entry rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different weight conventions.
Use the exercise-specific Paused Barbell Back Squat setup and load convention
Barbell positioned across upper back (high-bar or low-bar allowed). Controlled descent until hip crease is below the top of the knee. Lifter pauses motionless at the bottom for ~1–2 seconds (no bounce or stretch reflex). Rep counts only if lifter stands fully upright with hips and knees fully extended. Consistent pause depth and duration across all reps and across tests. Raw lifting only. Allowed equipment: barbell, rack, optional belt and lifting shoes. Disallowed: touch-and-go squats, partial depth reps, Smith machine or machine-based squats. Estimated 1RM is calculated from the entered load and reps.
Use one Smith machine and full standardized depth
Enter the Smith machine load in the active unit. Keep both hands fixed on the bar, follow the machine’s fixed track, descend until the hip crease clearly reaches at least knee level, and return to full hip-and-knee extension under control. Do not count excessive forward foot placement, partial depth, bouncing, bottom rebound, torso collapse, assistance, a free-weight squat, hack squat, or leg press.
