Barbell Push Jerk vs Squat Jerk Strength Standards
Compare your barbell push jerk and squat jerk against strength standards for your sex and bodyweight. Enter one recent set of 1–12 reps for each lift to see estimated one-rep maxes, strength levels, next targets, and priority.
First lift: total barbell load and 1–12 strict reps. Second lift: weight used and 1–12 strict reps. Pounds or kilograms. For the first exercise, consistent grip, stance, dip depth, receiving style, and recovery standard. For the second exercise, complete strict squat jerk repetitions through full range with a stable setup, controlled weight, and no assistance. Each lift is compared with its own standards, so the heavier lift is not automatically the stronger one.
Barbell Push Jerk vs Squat Jerk Strength Standards
Use these tables to compare the estimated one-rep max required for the barbell push jerk and squat jerk to reach the same strength level at each listed bodyweight. The numbers are calculator targets, not a required gap between the two lifts.
Choose the men’s or women’s table, find the closest bodyweight row, and read across to Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, or Elite. Each entry shows Barbell Push Jerk / Squat Jerk, with pounds above kilograms. Use the calculator for your exact bodyweight and recent sets.

How Your Barbell Push Jerk vs Squat Jerk Result Is Calculated
The calculator estimates both one-rep maxes, rates each one against its exercise and bodyweight standards, and then compares the two ratings.
1. Estimate a one-rep max from each set
The entered weight is used directly for one rep. With 2–12 reps, both estimates are compared and the lower value is used.
- Epley: weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
- Brzycki: weight × 36 ÷ (37 − reps)
Set quality matters for this Barbell Push Jerk vs Squat Jerk comparison. Enter technically consistent, challenging sets, and prefer lower-rep results when practical because the estimate extends less far beyond the performed set.
2. Find the barbell push jerk strength level
For barbell push jerk, the individual exercise thresholds start from reference bodyweights of 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women. Exact-bodyweight targets use reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
The target rises more slowly than bodyweight so larger lifters are expected to lift more without requiring strength to increase pound for pound.
3. Find the squat jerk strength level
The standards use the sex-specific thresholds from the individual Squat Jerk tool. Targets begin at 190 lb for men and 150 lb for women, then adjust to exact bodyweight with reference target × (user bodyweight ÷ reference bodyweight) to the two-thirds power.
This adjustment expects larger lifters to move more weight, but it does not increase the target pound for pound with bodyweight.
4. Compare the two results
The lift with the lower Beginner-to-Elite rating is the priority. If both ratings match, the calculator requires a 10-point difference in next-level progress before naming a priority; otherwise it reports Balanced.
Treat the result as a training comparison rather than an explanation of why one lift trails. Set quality, fatigue, skill, and training exposure all matter. Age range is recorded anonymously but does not change these standards.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Estimate each max | Use the entered weight for 1 rep; for 2–12 reps, keep the lower formula result. |
| Rate the barbell push jerk | Use the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule. |
| Rate the squat jerk | Use the exercise-specific estimated max and adjust targets to exact bodyweight with the two-thirds scaling rule. |
| Compare different levels | Name the lower-level lift as the priority. |
| Compare matching levels | Use Balanced unless the difference in progress toward the next level reaches 10 points. |

Barbell Push Jerk and Squat Jerk Exercises Used by This Calculator
For a useful comparison, perform a strict barbell push jerk and a strict squat jerk using the setup and load rules below. Use strict, repeatable Barbell Push Jerk and Squat Jerk tests that follow each exercise’s setup, range of motion, equipment, and weight-entry rules. Do not mix variations, assistance, partial range, momentum, or different weight conventions.
Use the Barbell Push Jerk setup and load convention
Total barbell load, bodyweight, and reps. Stable front-rack or shoulder-start position. Controlled dip with mostly vertical torso. Vertical leg drive. Clear rebend under the bar. No-split overhead catch. Full elbow, hip, and knee lockout. Controlled standing recovery before the rep counts. No push press, press-out, split jerk, squat jerk, thruster, or clean-and-jerk substitution. Consistent grip, stance, dip depth, receiving style, and recovery standard.
Use the Squat Jerk setup and load convention
The entered weight for strict Squat Jerk. Valid Squat Jerk reps. The movement must follow the defined Squat Jerk path: barbell starts in a front rack or shoulder-start position, is dipped and driven overhead, then received in a full overhead squat before recovery to standing and finish with A valid finish requires the defined end position for Squat Jerk, visible control of the weight, and no assistance or substituted exercise style. Consistent setup, range, and finish quality across the entered set. No substituted exercise or assisted reps.
